Dale Richard Haffley World War II Army Veteran Dale Richard Haffley, 84, of Erie, died Thurs., April 3, 2008 at his residence. He was born Dec. 31, 1923 in Aaronsburg, Center Co., Pa., son of the late Harvey W. and Margaret Whitmeyer Haffley. Dale Haffley's life was one of service and support of country, community, youth, friends and family. He proudly served his country as a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European theatre including tours in North Africa and Italy. Service during the Korean War was stateside with U.S. Army 28th infantry division. He served as union steward while employed by Hammermill Paper Co. for 35 years retiring in 1986, supporting the United Way fund drives at the Erie plant. He was an active member of Tyrian-Commonwealth Lodge No. 362 F.& A.M.; Scottish Rite, Valley of Erie; and Zem Zem Shrine, where he served on the Directors Staff. He was a Past Chapter Advisor for the Erie Chapter, Order of DeMolay and was a Cross of Honor Recipient. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ having served on church council and as church sexton, and belonged to Gem City Gun Club. Dale shared and taught his love of the outdoors with his sons, daughters, grandchildren and friends as an avid hunter, fisherman and horseback rider. Most important to Dale was his legacy of family.
He was happily married to and is survived by his wife of 57 years, Florence G. Miller Haffley. He is also survived and will be sadly missed by daughters, Sherrill Grygier and husband Steve Grygier, and Karol Campbell and husband Eric, all of Erie; sons, Dennis Haffley and Chrystal of Albion and Dwayne Haffley and wife Debra of Erie; stepson, George Kirkland and wife Priscilla of Apex, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Karen Haffley of Erie; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son, Aaron D. Haffley; brother, Francis "Jack" Haffley; granddaughter, Samantha Haffley; and stepmother, Edna Rachau Haffley. Visitation will be private at the convenience of the family with Tyrian-Commonwealth Lodge No. 362 F.& A.M. conducting services. Friends may attend a memorial service at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 1024 Peach St., Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 1 p.m. The Rev. Wayne E. Sova will officiate.
