Surnames: Grider
Hi, I was born a Grider living in Ky. I was told that my G-Grandfather (Fell Grider) came to the US from Germany by ship to NY, and then came by train to Louisville, KY. He then traveled south to Russell co. Ky. where I live today. Then started farming and married, outlived three wives and had 16 children. His son, my Grandfather (Forest Grider) was the infant child of the first wife who died. Any information on the Grider family would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Suzanne Harris

Just a little interesting fact...In Lenoir, NC, The town I grew up in, there is a small plaque on the corner of the old Lenoir High School grounds that tells about Fort Grider. I don't know much about it other than in was a fort to protect settlers from attacks from the Cherokee in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and was Named after Fredrick Grider

I remember reading somewhere that during the Civil War several of the Gryders who signed up couldn't read or write so they just told the recruiter their names and they spelled the way they thought it was supposed to be spelled. That's one story about how the variations in the name came about
