Hi, I am the oldest granddaughter of Ferd. I am pretty sure that he and his brother Art started the Burwell Livestock market. My parents were Cecil and Irma Shafer Butts. Both my sisters have passed. Madelon Petersen & Janice Craven & my little brother Herky (Leonard Dale). Grampa Butts' mother lived with them for a while when I was in high school. They had moved to town by then. We called her Ma. I'm pretty sure her name was Martha. I remember hearing how her husband died trying to jump off the train down by the Goodenow's place. I even have the article from the paper somewhere. LaVonne

I am looking for any information on Carl Grunkemeyer b. 1887, 1920 Census had him in Garfield NE. He married an Alice Jenkins. They are my children's Great-Great Grandparents on my husbands side. My mother-in-law (a Grunkemeyer) is also very curious to find out about her family as well. She grew up in Colorado, but knows that Carl was from NE. Wondering if this is the same Carl related to Marly Grunkemeyer.

Dear Sir,
My Husband and I are blacksmiths who own and operate an ornamental Ironworks in Portland, Oregon. We own a piece of forging equipment known as a Little Giant Hammer, a tool used for forging. We recently discovered that our Little Giant hammer was first purchased by a Mr. Grunkemeyer of Burwell Nebraska back in 1920. The hammer was a wedding gift to us, and an invaluable item in our shop, in use every day. When we had the spring break(the original) My husband called the parts dealer who has all the original records from the company, and he told us who had owned it so long ago. We are also thrilled to know the name of the smith who first purchased this tool. It was bought for us by my parents near Ainsley Neb.
We are both curious if you have found any Grunkemeyers who were blacksmiths in Burwell? Both my husband and I are German Americans, and find this pretty neat!
Thank you for your time,
Sincerely, Heidi and Dan Klug
The surname "Grünkemeyer" has two syllables: "Grünke" (Umlaut: two dots over the u, in English: ue) and "Meyer". There is Grünke in different versions like Greunke, Grönke, Gröne etc. It is the derivation of "green". Meyer is not a americanized form of Meier. It gives the name in Germany in different forms like Mayer, Maier (Bavaria); Meier, Meyer (Westphalia, Hanover) etc. Originally the Meyer was the representative of the nobleman; in order to manage his estate (Farm, Forest). Later also an lessee of a farm, land or forest.
where is the family from? My family with the grunkemeyer/grinkemeyer, etc name is from Franklin County Indiana. My g-grandmother was Anna Grunkemeyer and had a brother by the name of Joseph with a father named John and grandfather of Henry. Take a look at the Rootsweb site for Franklin County. It has censuses for various decades. Its census index of 1870 has the family mispelled with a K. Let me know if this family sounds like yours. I have a handwritten copy of a obituary of Mary, wife of John.
On a side, still trying to find out the relationship between John and a Theodore Grunkemeyer. Also was this name originally with a German umlaut? Could explain the different spellings in English since the German sound is different from sounds in English

Hey Pearl,

Can't answer your question, but you and I are related. I have done a fair amount of genealogy research and the Grunkemeyer's in Nebraska are an isolated family. My Grandfather, Morris Grunkemeier was born in Burwell. He is the son of August Grunkemeyer who lived there with family after moving from Germany at a young age with parents and other siblings. Do you have any details of the family line? Stories? Perhaps were could swap?

Hi there !

By coincedence I found your message on this board here and found it very interesting to see that also people in the US are having the same name as I have.

My grandpa, Heinrich Wilhelm Gruenkemeier ( but written with the Umlaut "u" ) came from a small town in the mentioned area. The town is called Hilter.

Please contact me to see what else matches.

best regards

Uwe Grünkemeier, Kaarst, Germany

There must be someone in Nebraska who remembers why
the spelling of the name was changed and by whom. I
was under the impression it was by my Grandpa, Herman,
but not by all his brothers. Janet Grunkemeier Cook

It is true that the Burwell Grunkemeyer's are eyer, BUT, so are (were) we. The story passed in our family is that EVERYONE was eier, then some changed to eyer. Do you have any passed stories or knowledges? My grandfather WAS from Burwell, too.

Grunkemeier

I too have been looking for info. I am part of the West Coast Grunkemeier's. Family name originates from Westerkappeln, and Osnabruck area in Westphalia region of northern Germany. The name, roughly translated, means watcher by the side of a field. It is an old farming name. My lineage is from Hermann Henrich Grunkemeier, who settled in Burwell, NE, 1870's. There are a lot of Grunkemeier/eyer's from NE. There is a Grunkemeier who is from the states, now living in Germany, a third cousin of mine I found out, who is tracing our lineage in Germany, where the records are supposed to be really good. I have been interested in finding a family crest or something, and have called about 20 Grunkemeier's in Germany (my wife speaks German), but nobody seems to think one exists. Well, this is about what I know. Hope it helps, cuz!
