Hi I have been looking for information to add to my family history. Even though the Grubens are not direct, two married into the family. I am looking for Ono Gruben , born about 1876, immigrated about 1881from Germany. He had a sister Lillian Gruben Both married Zimmermans (brother and sister) Richard Zimmerman and Anna Zimmerman. Ono had a first wife (?) with a daughter born in Illinois. Her name was Lucille Gruben and she was born about1913.
Thank You, Rose Oyer Gauthier

I was just searching (AGAIN) tonight and found your note ... My grandmother was the granddaughter of Gerd and Lydia Gruben. I don't have alot of info where they came from in Germany, but I know we are talking of the same persons. I hope this is still good after 7 years.

(Claudia's husband David Nelson writing) Claudia has a best friend, Rebecca Detig, of Dixon IL, whose mother-in-law was Josephine Engelina Gruben (born 1902) who died 1996 in Rochelle (Ogle Cty) IL. Josephine was married to [William] Alvin Detig (m 1892). Their late son Robert was married to Becky for more than 50 years and died in February 2011.

Becky Detig, Claudia and I will be in Leer, Ostfriesland, Germany in a couple of weeks, visiting friends. While there we will research Josephine's ancestral roots in Ostfriesland: Onno Janssen Gruben, born in Ostbriesland 1875 and his father Gerd Janssen Gruben, who is reported to have been born in Westerholt, Ostfriesland on 24 July 1854 and died 24 August 1931 in Rochelle IL. Onno Janssen Gruben (above) and Edward Heinrich Berke Gruben were older German-born brothers of John Gruben, born 1882 in the USA. I believe you are a descendant of that John Gerhard Gruben.

Maybe I am confused, but in any event please let us know if there is a connection from your viewpoint. Becky and Robert Detig's four children are likely related to you.

We depart 5 August.

Hello
Yes Bob & Becky Detig are my cousins. They would come to Gruben reunion that My mother had until she died in 2006. My mother Lois Gruben/Walker was first cousin to Josphine and Josphine was my mother's god mother. John was the first born in the States. I would like to know what you info you find in Germany. There is very little info about Lukka(Lydia)Meyer Gruben b3/9/1855 Asnes, Germany d8/22/1922 Rochelle,IL. Gerd wife.

Yes, we did visit Leer, Ostfriesland in August of 2011. Sorry we didn't get back to you. Thanks for the reminder. Becky Detig has since remarried. She is now Becky Hundrieser and lives in Dixon IL.

We had one important finding in Emsland (Emsland belongs to Niedersachsen; it borders Ostfriesland, but does not belong to Ostfriesland). It is northeast of Leer. We think the town where Lukka Meyer or Meiers was from is most likely Esnes, a neighboring town of Westerholt, Emsland, where Gerd Janssen Gruben (1854-1931) was from. Esnes seemingly got mispelled Asnes in the US. That follows logically when considering the different pronunciation of the first letter in the two languages.

We visited both Westerholt and Esnes as they are not distant from one another. The Esnes church is large with a very tall steeple. It is said the church tower was used as a lookout for boats and ships on the North Sea. In Esnes there are still Grubens listed in the phone book. We tried to call one Onno Gruben, but there was no answer.

That's all we came home with. We didn't have much time. We did speak to one pastor in the area, but the timing was not convenient for her to help us. A woman tending a grave in the Westerholt cemetery explained to us that we would not likely find any graves of Grubens or Meyer, because the custom is that after 30 years the graves are removed and replaced by the newly deceased.

The most likely immigration date is 1881 for the Grubens. Do you have any backup for that?
