Hi Sharon my dad was John Fredrick Adams the youngest son of Malvina (Veen) and John Adams. My Dad was very close with the Hagans re: my Uncle Bill Hagan and his sister Aunty Marge and I spent a lot of my childhood with Trisha Uncle Bills daughter whom my mum and I are still in contact with. I would love any information you may have on the Growcott family. Im also tracking down my Adams Family Tree and have traced it to Rockhampton Australia which is quite funny as my youngest daughter lives there now :)

Hi Anne
Thanks for your reply. yes my dad actualy spelt my name wrong on the birth certificate so hence the diferent spelling from my nanas name. Apparently he didnt want to name me Mulvena but my mother insisted :)which I am realy pleased she did as it is nice to have it passed down through the generations. My mum has photos of some of my grandmothers sisters not sure which ones but will have to look them up. My dads name was Jack (John Frederick named after my grandad) he was the 3rd of nanas 4 children. We lived up in Auckland for most of my childhood years but i am now in Qld Australia have been for the last 25yrs. My dads youngest sister Aunty Evlynn lives in Blenhem and my Uncle Jim in westport and aunty Aileen over here in qld. Also I have an uncle Bill Hagon Does the name Hagon ring a bell with you our two familys were quite close growing up. I think he was one of nanas cousins kids anyway was realy nice to hear from you and i look forward to more news of the growcott family.

Hello Mulvena. I am your grandmothers niece. My mother Julia was Mulvenas sister. I knew your Grandmother as aunty Veen.I remember visiting quite a few times with Mum and Dad and my younger brother Gary.
Your name has been in the family for quite a while. From memory i think it was My Grandmother's (Ellen) sisters name. The spelling was a bit different.
We lived in Hokitika until I was about 6 then we moved to Dunedin. We visited every time we went to the (Coast)
I will give you the email address of Malcolm Growcott. He is Ellen's youngest son. He lives with his wife in Blenheim.
Apparently he is acually my mothers son, but was raised as my uncle. He is still going strong as far as I know. we keep in touch mostly by email.
His email address is Janmalc12@hotmail.com
I hope you find some information from this mail.

Best wishes.
Sample of the 1st hit of a huge number and may be enlightening; has an expandable mat here at this site.:

Highlighted gazetteer entry
In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Dawley like this:

"DAWLEY-MAGNA, a township and a parish in Madeley district, Salop. The township lies on the Shrewsbury canal, and on the Wellington and Severn Junction railway, under the Wrekin, near Horsehay r. station, and 4 miles SE by S of Wellington. It has a post office, ‡ of the name of Dawley, under Wellington. The parish includes also Dawley Bank, ¾ of a mile distant, with another post office there under Wellington; also the townships of Dawley-Parva and Malinslee. Acres, 2, 743. Real property, £70, 858; of which £37, 253 are in ironworks, and £28, 442 in mines. Pop., 11, 013. Houses, 2, 050. The property is divided among a few. Most of the inhabitants are employed in blast furnaces, forges, bar-iron mills, and collieries. Many short railways, for local transit, run among the works. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lichfield. Value, £150.* Patrons, R. Phillips, Esq., and others. The church is tolerable. The vicarages of Dawley-Parva and Malinslee are separate benefices. A Wesleyan chapel, of coloured bricks, with stone dressings, at a cost of about £1, 200, was built in 1861. There are chapels also for Baptists, Primitive Methodists, and New Connexion Methodists. Charities, £10."

Contact my by private mail and I will see what I can find. I need the surname, ages, birth places of anyone who may bein the Canadian census and what province to start with.........the boundaries of the US and Canada were more or less "open door" until around 1909 in most places. Someplaces became more controlled earlier if I recall correctly. I am not a real student of Canada although I have research in the Country for my grandma's migration in 1911..and my grandpa took off for the Canadian Wilderness to do his "thing" and trap fur bearing animals in 1914. The, too, came south through Mishigan and you may be refering to Lansing, Michigan.

I will await the information before looking.

Regards,
Linda

If you visit the web site www.historicaldirectories.org/ you can read about the history of Salop and other counties/districts of England and Wales to some digree. The directories are searchable, the site is free.

From my understanding, Whitchurch is a Township with the town of Whitchurch still being a place. My Great-Grandmother was born there in 1867 and her parents were also born there and the Parish of Whitchurch, Church of England, St. Alkmunds Church is the parish church of most of the records for any Church of England records, especially before 1837, provided you know for sure your links go in that same parish and same denomination. The film I am reading indicates that the records from Tilstock {{.........considered an "abode" so was likely a street and a village proper or estate farm or location at the times.......}} were according to the "new law" of recording, transferred from the Tilstock Church to the Whitchurch Parish records books and then on to Ightfield according to Diocese regulation..........very confusing! Makes for more than one place to look for records.

The Parish of Ellesmere is in the Township of Ellesmere but still in the county of Salop/Shropshire.

There is a Whitchurch Historical Society on the Web.......looks interesting, too!

I might be able to look for the baptisms in the 1815 circa for Thomas GROCOTT you mention. It is a FILM and the number is searchable in the LDS Church web site under Search, then Library and Catalog and then select Film and put in this number: 1702220. The link will take you to a film discription of this film. You can also view the vilm notes which are more comprehensive.

Also, if you use the ancestry census for England, be sure to try out the links above the census page you read. The last one in the line of description above the image will have a link to descriptions of the particular area enumerated. Be sure to recall the District numbers given as you will have to select that particular link to get the correct description.

If you use the Free BMD indixes from Rootsweb which are of the GRO records, you can also read a bit about the history of Dawley Magna and it's record keeping.
Regards,
Linda

I will keep an eye out for some Frances and Prancis persons as well as Benjamin's ............... Have you some specific circa dates you are missing? I will also be getting the film previous to the 1813 to....film. However, most of the persons in the present one I am reading are children of the previous generation and starting their families, or persons at the "tail end" of their family of issue. I may or may not find the surname GROWCOTT in the same parish.

Which would indicate another place back in time..........

Unfortunately, JONES is a huge family and I have not done this surname.

Have you posted the JONES links you have that might be close to the same area as your GROWCOTT line? Perhaps there may be some relationship with marriages..........such as siblings marriages, etc.

Tks for the reply. I had to grab something solid when I read it. Hehe. Re Sarah though, I been on Scotlandspeople and its a nightmare. There are actually quite a few Sarah Allford/Hallfords and the way the site is structured, its a money transfer system!
Re the Births, even if you give specific dates and names (Ive tested a few knowns), the database will spit up pages of info. You have no idea which one it is, therefore, cha-ching! Its done this way on purpose in order to fleece you. So its going to take a while to track her down, if in fact she died in Scotland. Obviously if I get a death cert, I should be able to get Mum and Dad details and work back that way. Shesh! I didnt think this would be so much fun......
Regards, Richard Hallford

Sorry, I still looking. My problem is that her Surname is spelled several different ways, so I dont know which one is correct. Too easy to get a red herring. To complicate things, her Husband, Levi, spelled his surname different at different times too!
Ill keep trying.
Regards, Richard

Tks for the reply, and so quick too. No, I dont know who her parents were, but Im going to chase a death cert to find out, and or the Marriage Cert. Levi remarried again, but still in Scotland.
Further, in the Scotish 1871 Census, Levi is living with wife Sarah, cited as being born in England. They have two year old Daugh Sarah Ann. This was in Motherwell, Lanarkshire. So I dont know if they were married in Scotland or England, but I will look.
More when I get it. Also Im dodgy on the spelling of the name.
I have a copy of the Marriage cert of Mary Ann Allford, Daughter of Levi Allford and Sarah Allford, MS Grocart, deceased. That is on 31 Nov 1891. So possible that Sarah died in Scotland. I will chase.
Regards, Richard.

Sir/Madam. My name is Richard Hallford. I have started family history for a couple of years, but mostly tinkering. I am now more actively involved in it.I noticed your communications here (my email if you want is r.hallford56@gmail.com).
My descendants come from the Shropshire area. Specifically Levi Allford/Hallford. He married Sarah Grocott. They had Mary ann in 1871 (certificate). This was in Dalziel, Scotland. However prior to that in the 1861 Census, Levi was living with his Dad, Edward Allford (certificate)and the address was (spelling) Hincherley Road, Dawley Magna, No 1140. Levi is listed as being 17 and born in Dawley.
I know its currently a week link, but do you have any information re this. I am going to search for the marriage cert for the Levi Allford, Mary Ann marriage and this may tell me more. When I get it, I am happy to correspond. NB I was born in Scotland, but now living in Australia. I was back in Scotland in Feb visiting my mum and found some more Hallfords! Also found photo of my Dad (deceased) that I did not know existed. It was his passing out day for his RAF training. Guess where in was? Salop, Shropshire!!!!!
Looking forward to hearing from you either way, Richard Hallford.

my forefathers are definately from dawley which I understand is now part of telford. The jones family are all from wellington. Is whitchurch still a separate town or is that part of telford too.I would like to make a connection between John Growcott born 1791 in Dawley, Benjamin Grocott born in 1796 and Thomas born in Whitchurch in 1815.I used to know these area vey well but my memories are getting hazy.I actually took my driving licence in wellington.I don't understand what film you mean. Thanks Valerie.Do you mean microfiche?

many thanks linda,
I only started this research last may. I also only have had a computer since then.In fact I got the computer to enable me to do the research. So from day 1 I was also learning the computer. I am completely self taught which at my age was not easy. However I found that it has also sharpened my memory. So the information that you just sent me is extremely useful. Thanks again. Valerie.
I note from your profile that you are in America. Is that Washington State?

Thanks again, you are giving me a great deal to take in. I shall have to print it off and study it quietly! One point of interest is that the wrekin is there. This is a hill. Abig saying in my family is , " a run around the wrekin" It means when someone is fooling you.I often use it here and people look at me as if I am stark staring mad. Now I know why it is such a strong saying in my family in england.
My query tonight is about something completely different. Trevor[my husband] well his grandfather is born in canada in 1875. In the 1880 us census he is now in usa. Its a place called ishpeming. I see that the border goes through the lake[its in michigan]. Did they change the canadian /us border at this time?He came to australia in 1895. In australia it is very hard to find out things as they destroyed the census. thanks again Val

My gt gt grandfather was John Growcott born in dawley magna in 1791. His wife was Hannah born in 1796 also in dawley magna. My gt grandfather was John Growcott born in1821 in the same place. He married Frances Jones born in wellington1826.He also had sister Martha born in 1827, a sister Ann born in 1833 and a brother william in 1816.In your post of 6th sept 2004 you refer to this family with benjamin as john's brother. I haven't found this benjamin. There is a benjamin born in 1825 but I haven't yet found who he belongs to. I have to do all of my research on ancestry because of where I live and I have found through them my entire direct line in every direction for 220 years. But I have only just started to follow the side lines.valerie

the benjamin grocott who married mary price is benjamin grocott born in 1855 in burslem not the one born in bilston. Benjamin from bilston marries a lady named mary ann. However I think that these people are also from the same family as they move from bilston to burslem [milton] around the same time as my gt grandparents move from wolverhampton to tunstall. The bilston family has a daughter catherine who is also listed as being born in wolverhampton.Of course it was the time of new industries and my grocott family have been great travellers.Several of us now live in australia.

I do not have Sarah on my tree - by 1845 when she was born according to the 1871 Scotland census, my immediate line had moved to Bilston, Wolverhampton. However, there is probably a link somewhere! Do you know who Sarah's parents were or where she was born?

While this is not my line, I have to put a reply in this posting set due to the film work I am doing at the moment on the Salop/Whitchurch Parish, Church of England records from 1813 through to circa 1894.....

My lines are LEA and VENALBES, MADDOCKS, WOOLLEY and some JONES, PHILLIPS, CURETON, WALTERS...and many links.

In film #170220, pARISH OF WHITCHURCH, Baptisms, Burials, and Marriages 1813 through [circa] 1898...from the LDS.

the first GROWCOTT
Thomas and Ann of Tilstock, Whitchurch Parish had a child named Ann who was baptized on April 21, 1816. THomas GROWCOTT was a laborer and their abode was Tilstock.

There is a continution of the surname throughout the years in the film. It may be to someone's advantage to rent the film for a time.

Regards,
Linda

I have a Benjamin Growcott on my tree born 1848 Bilston who married Mary Price in 1875 in Burslem. Think we could have a link. Could you give me some dates and places for your Grocotts so I can check? In the 1871 census the whole family including a direct ancestor, Isaiah born 1850 Bilston, were in Milton Village, Burslem.
