There is a novel called 'Not Without Peril', that was written about some of the family members affected by this situation. It is very interesting and well worth reading if you are able to locate a copy. It was originally written in 1941, I think, with reprints in 1989 and 2004, so it shouldn't be toooooo difficult to find a copy.
