Katherine GROSSE m. Capt. Burns Maryland ~1800

I am searching for information on the family of Katherine GROSSE who according to family records married a Captain BURNS (first name unknown) probably around 1800.

The only definite information I have been able to track down is that she appears in the 1850 census as "Catherine BURNS" in ward 6 of Baltimore Maryland where she is listed as age 76, which would put her birth date as about 1774.

Her daughter Mary Ann BURNS married John H. TUCKER in 1829 and Catherine/Katherine is living with them in 1850.

I have found no connection to either the Pennsylvania GROSS families or the western Maryland GROSS families.

My instinct says that there is a connection to Roger GROSSE/GROCE/DEGROSSE (b. 21 Dec 1616) b. England, immig. 1637, who received a land grant in 1658 for Gross’ Coate, Talbot Co., MD. I have not found any proof of such a connection.

Gross' Coate subsequently became property of the TILGHMAN family, and there is a connection between the TILGHMAN family and a Richard CARTER of Talbot Co., MD. Our family tree also has an Ann Trumble CARTER (married 19 Nov 1805 in Baltimore Co., MD to John TUCKER, immigrant, father of John H. TUCKER, above).

Any information about any of these people would be greatly appreciated.
GROSS John P. 1915-2012 Mansfield, Ohio

MANSFIELD: John P. Gross, age 97, quietly passed away Monday, December 10, 2012.

John was born in Mansfield, Ohio Richland County) on November 14, 1915 to the late John and Karoline (Hess) Gross.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII performing various duties in a large warehousing facility in Argentia, Newfoundland supplying frozen fish to the U.S. Navy submarines.
Returning to Mansfield, he began a career in the accounting field.
He retired as Vice-President of Bank One (formerly Farmers Bank), operated the John P. Gross Company and was the Business Manager for the Draffan Family Partnership until he retired at age 94.

While not at work in his career of accounting, he would travel the country in their motor home with his wife Miriam, whom was an accredited floral judge, to participate in flower shows and assist in her judging competitions. While on those excursions, John would walk the shorelines, woods and prairies looking for the perfect stone, branch, or flower that would offer that unique appearance to catch the judges' eye.

In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking. He often said with love that his most difficult task was maintaining the floral gardens at his home to Miriam's' rigid standards. All agree they did an exceptional job in those regards.

John was a 65 year member of Mansfield Masonic Lodge #35 F & AM, joining in 1947 and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus, Mansfield Rotary-where he was Past President and his beloved Men's Garden Club.
John volunteered his time as treasurer of the Mansfield Cancer Society.
He was a long-time member of St. John's United Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife of 75 years, Miriam Berlo Gross in 2011 and daughter, Melodie Gross Wineland in 1998.
He is survived by son-in-law, Read Wineland; a special cousin, Randy (Mary Ann) Jacobs and family; several cousins including Sally O'Reilly, Kathleen Huston, Kathie (Larry)Marsh and Don (Liz)Maxwell.

Friends and family may visit from 4-6 p.m. Friday, December 14, 2012 at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield where Masonic services will be held at 4:00 p.m. A memorial service conducted by Pastor Steven Storkel will follow the visitation at 6:00 p.m. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the McGowan Courage Award, c/o Mansfield Rotary, PO Box 3918, Mansfield, OH 44907 or Kingwood Center in Mansfield, Ohio, a 47 acre former estate garden open to the public since 1953.
900 Park Avenue West • Mansfield, Ohio 44906

The family wishes to thank the staff at Winchester Terrace for the wonderful care given to John during his stay.

Online guest registry at www.wappner.co

Sorry I didn't see your post until today. If you've been reserching the Wendel Gross family, have you seen his will? In it he names as one of his daughters Anna Eva. Eva Gross(1777-1858) married Frederick Stough(1774-1834) of Dover, PA. I supect but have been unable to prove Eva's sister Catharine, also named in Wendel's will, married Frederick Stough's older brother Johannes Stough. Johannes and Catharine Stough had sons, John and Peter, both born in 1800 and both married women named Elizabeth Gross. Each had large families, and are ancestors of many Stough's living today, but were these men twins? Their tombstone and Strayer's church death records say not. If not, were they raised in the Johannes/Catharine Stough family as adopted children? There isn't any baptism records that I have found for John or Peter Stough.
I may be able to help in your Stough research. Which Stough branch are your ancestors linked?

Robert Calvin Gross Sr

Robert Calvin Gross Sr moved to the Philadelphia area of Pennsylvania from Harlan County, Kentucky - son is Robert Calvin Gross Jr age 63 and he lives with us, never knew who his mother was, father never mentioned her. Father married woman named Helen who had three children - Catherine (Katherine), Dell (Dale) and Barbara. He does not know her maiden name. Helen's mother lived in New Jersey and they lived with her occasionally. Robert Sr. worked at a textile factory just outside Philadelphia and is now deceased. Robert Jr also worked at the textile factory for 2 or 3 yrs after leaving the Marine Corps, he does not know when or where or why his father died and doesn't know where he is buried. He says Helen died first and Robert Sr went to live with one of the three stepdaughters and died of a broken heart. One of the stepdaughters (Catherine) married a Puerto Rican gentleman (El Pidio Ramon, called Pete. Pete is now deceased.) and they lived at 31?? Palethorpe St in Philadelphia. (The Kensington/Allegheny area.) Stepsister Dell (?) lived in Browns Mill, New Jersey. Either Dell or Barbara was married to or living with a musician. Robert Jr. has significant dementia and has lost his family. He married three times, once to a lady named Mary Groan (Grone) in Philadelphia, once to a lady named Lucille Spatz in Reading, PA; and once to a lady named Jacquelyn Santella in Phoenixville, PA. He is divorced from all three and doesn't know where they are or anything much about them. Robert Jr. had one daughter Holly who now lives in Chattanooga Tennessee, is married and has two children.

Does anyone know anything about Robert Sr or Robert Jr that would allow us to at least contact his family in the event of an emergency? Or to establish some type of family history for him? Anything would be helpful,

John W. Gross 1833 Campbell County, Tn - What happened to him???

I am looking for the date of death of John W. Gross who was born in Campbell County, Tn. He married Sarah C. Madden on 19 Nov 1853 in Campbell County, they had three children all of whom, including Sarah, are buried in Gross Cemetery in Smith County, TN. (You may view their memorials on Findagrave.com) Sarah filed for pension in May of 1886 as a widow back in TN. I am led to believe thru the records I have reviewed that the military moved them to Ky. I am thinking that he may have died in Ky. ANY information anyone may have would be most welcomed. this is my husband's 3rd great grandfather.

There are a few George Washington Grosses, a father and a son and then the sons son...yes they use the same names which makes researching confusing. My dad who is alive, John Wesley Gross was named after his grandfather, John Henry Gross, who is my grandmother (Phyllis Nadine Gross (Long's father. There is another John Robert Gross who is alive and goes by Bob Gross.
Good luck with your research, it is a challenge I know.

I was successful in tracing my father's Gross side pretty far back, but not in those who came from Germany. Feel free to look at my Gross family tree to see if it helps you.

Hello! I'm so happy to hear from you Fam. I had a stomach bug when you first sent this message, and, unfortunately, I just lost my mom, Sonny's eldest daughter Sharon, on Tuesday. I did try to reach you at the email address you gave, but it bounced back to me. Can you confirm it? My email is kmcsterling@gmail.com. I didn't get to make it to the family reunion this year, but i was at the picnic we had last year, so we may have met. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Kertia

I have recently been doing research on the Wendell Gross family and would like to compare notes with you. I'd also like to compare notes on the Stough/Stauch family because I am part of that family as well.
