Thank you but i have checked the same 1900 census. I thought that he may have been the Will i was looking for but it list him as already being married. Also i have recently found my great grandfathers' death certificate and it says that he was born in 1861 and so does his tombstone. I also found out that his first name was actually John. His parents are listed as Stokes (think that i read it right) and Sarah Watts. However i can't find anything about Stokes or Sarah. There was a Stokes McIntyre in NC but the dates and names do not match up. And as for the grooms Lizzie's father John was in and out of there home according to the census records so i am still working on that line. Most of my Quick line is from Marlboro County and parts of NC.
if you look at that 1900 census you will see that the Grooms' and McIntyre's were neighbors. You should probably check the previous census to see if they were living next to each other then. Lizzie and Will are about 10 yrs apart in age. I too have Purvis, Grooms, and Quick family names in my lineage although it all appears to be different lines from yourself. I will look into things a little more.

Hi Allison, I have never found anything about an earlier marriage for William Grooms, son of Solomon. However, in looking all this information over again I am wondering if she could be the daughter of Solomon Grooms brother also named William?

When I proved Solomon as a DAR Patriot there was information about his brother, named William and I believed they both ended up in Clark Co. KY. Given the early date of Cynthia's birth this might be something to look at? Carol

The place I started with Solomon was Washington Co. PA. The 1783 Morgan Township Tax list has only William and Solomon Grooms owning property. In the PA Archives Sxith Series Vol II pub 1906, p. 14 County of Washington, Associators and Militia, Solomon grooms is found in the Privates 4th Class and William Grooms is found as Private 6th Class. No other men with that name are found in either of these sources. Obviously it is possible that there were other brothers of these two men, especially younger ones who might not have served, but it was my conclusion that William and Solomon were brothers that migrated from PA to KY and my research did not involve any of the other men that later were found to be in KY.

I don't know why the photos were in her house, but her mother-in-law's sister was married to Thomas Pate Grooms (born 1880 to Daniel and Anna Grooms).
Grooms of Berkeley County, South Carolina

I have two very old photos (daguerrotypes) of two men that my grandmother gave to me many years ago. She told me that they were photos of the Groomses. I don't know why the photos were in her house, but her mother-in-law's sister was married to Thomas Pate Grooms (born 1880 to Daniel and Anna Grooms). I'm thinking the photos are probably men from this Grooms line.

I was wondering if there's anybody who might be able to identify the photos or if there's a place on Ancestry to put photos of unknown people.

Thank you,
Sue
In the 1925 Charleston City Directory, Brodie Grooms is listed as living at 17 Warren Street. Also at that address is Gertis M. Grooms, Harry A. Grooms, and Robert M.Grooms and his wife, Julia Grooms.

From Gertis's age on FindaGrave, she may be a sister to Brodie. Robert M and Julia are more of the age his parents would be.

I hope this helps some and gives you some leads.

Sue
Hello,

I found where the historical reference to "Mary" comes from! It is from a bio of William's son, John W. Grooms, and is found in the book "The History of Nodaway County, Missouri" published in 1882.

The opening paragraph says, "John Groom was born in Clark County, Kentucky, May 1, 1817. William Groom and Mary Groom, his father and mother, were Kentuckians by birth. In the beginning of the year 1820, William Groom removed with his family to what is now Boone County, Missouri, where he remained through the winter of 1820-l. In the spring of 1821, he removed thence to Clay County, Missouri, where he continued to make his home until his death, March 14, 1822. William Groom left surviving him his widow and seven children, four boys and three girls. In 1826, his mother married John McGill. John Groom lived with his mother and stepfather until the year 1833."

I wonder if this is an error, since other records show that it was a Sarah, not a Mary, who married John McGill? At any rate, it seems to be the source (or one of the sources) for the name Mary.

Hi Sue, Carol, Peggy, Lucille and Floyd,

Just following up to see if anyone has found any further information about the possibility of an earlier wife for William Groom.

Sue, I was wondering if you remember where you found that he may have had a previous wife named Mary?

I descend from Cynthia Ann Groom, and am wondering if she might be William Groom's daughter, although her birth was earlier than his marriage to Sarah Woods.

Thanks for any help!

Thank you for your reply!

Yes, this William (1752-1811) could be a possibility. His dates definitely fit. However, his widow, Sarah Elizabeth "Sally" Parker, supposedly lived until 1835 according to information on other family tress. However, I'm not sure what the source is for that date; it could be wrong.... Cynthia Ann's mother supposedly remarried and then died about 1820.

Hi Carol,
I was also wondering what else you have on Williams father Solomon. You said you had him established as a DAR ??? Can you tell me more about that? I suspect that means you have some evidence that he fought in the Rev. War?
Do you know anything beyond Solomon, like his parents? I have him and his wife both being from Clark Co. KY, she being born in 1756, he in 1754. Is that correct? Do you know his wifes' maiden name? Did they ever live in PA? (on a census record, my Sarah Groom said place of birth Pennsylvania in abt. 1816)Any tidbits on this Groom family will be great! Thanks. send to: (my name spelled out first and last as it is above) and the at sign, and then galacticomm and then full stop, and then org. (I hate to type it out altogether, because of those automatic searches for addresses in different posts.)
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks,
Sue

Carol, You are a descendant through Williams son John? Actually I was just looking at his bio. It is strange that it says his mother was Mary! Also interesting is it says William left 7 children orphaned. Just as the first probate document did, but then Spencer is added, and that would make 8. And it still leaves the question of William Jr.
That aside, I was wondering how much you know about Johns life. There is a mystery I have been trying to solve, where did my Sarah die. In 1850, she is found in DeKalab Co. MO, as well as her brothers James & Aaron Groom, but her husband Samuel Smith at that time was 'looking for gold' in Yolo CA, together with your John Groom, and their brother Joseph Groom. Shortly after that, Sarahs 2 daughters from her marriage w/ Lindsey Boone, together w/ their husbands left for Oregon Territority. Some say Sarah went with them, and died within a year or 2, but her husband Samuel Smith lived out the rest of his life up in Nodaway Co. What I'm wondering is when did the Groom boys and Samuel come back from California. Perhaps Sarah went west to meet up w/ Samuel. Do you have any details about their time in California? Just wondering...
Sue

I can't actually remember where I got the information initially about William being married to a Mary before, but it seem like it was Peggy who wrote some of the first posts on this thread. Since then, I have looked into my Sarah extensively, and am satisfied that she is the daughter of William Groom & Sarah Woods, and the birth date most people use for her is wrong. Most people list her as being born Aug. 25th 1811, which is before William & Sarah Woods were married, but that is the birthdate for Sarah Grooms, daughter of Richard (cousin of my Sarah Groom), and that Sarah married an Owens, and died in Texas. My Sarah married Lindsey Boone, and later married Samuel Smith. The sarah who died in Texas has her birth date clearly on her tombstome, where as my Sarah's final resting place is unknown.
HOWEVER, in looking into all this, there is a question in my mind that maybe William WAS married before he married Sarah Woods. The reason is there is an older son whose name is William, much older than the other children. (and not his brother) That William Groom marries the daughter of Magill, who is the one who married Sarah Woods Groom after William died. Where did that William come from? He is in the probate records. And Spencer is not in the first list, but then in the second... I think there is a possibility that Cynthia could be from a previous marriage of William Grooms... But you should track down Peggy, I think she knows more than I.
Good luck. Sue

Hi Allison,
Yes, I kind of think that was an error. There are a couple errors in that Bio piece, like it says his sister married Lindsey Boone in 1837, but they married in 1832, had 2 children and Lindsey was dead before 1837. I can imagine someone interviewed him, and later wrote up the piece, and could have made errors with details.
There was however another place where i saw a family listing with William being married first to a Mary and then to a Sarah. I have found that place now, and it was Peggy L.Contreras who posted it (on GenForum, Nov 2003-Groom Family Genealogy Forum), but her source could have been that same article. In that listing it had my Sarah Groom as belonging to Mary, but I am now sure that my Sarah was indeed the daughter of William & Sarah Groom, and her cousins birthdate has been used extensively for her. After seeing the other Sarah Grooms tombstone which is in Texas, I am sure that people have just been using the wrong Sarah's date, and on the DeKalab Co. Census in 1850, (My Sarah (daughter of William) was then married to Samuel Smith, and it says 'Sally Smith' (Sally being a typical nickname for Sarah), it puts her birth at about 1816.
However, the question remains, if there was a William Jr., as mentioned in the probate documents as receiving land and eventually marrying a daughter of John McGill, who was he? He is refereed to as 'Jr'. Any theory's on him?
If you can find that forum page, it has Peggys email address, and she may have more by now. She is also a descendant of Cynthia Groom, and really looking for who she was.
Sue

Here are all the various notes I've collected on Solomon Groom(s). Maybe you can sort them out and reach some conclusions. Hope this helps a little.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Will Records of Clark County, Kentucky Volume II 28 August 1809-April 1826
Will Records of Clark County, Kentucky Book C
OSPage: 13
Name: Solomon Grooms
My wife, Sarah My eldest daughter, Mary Darnall, money due me from Achiles Darnall My eldest son, Richard My second daughter, Hanah Chaney My second surviving son, William My third daughter, Sarah Written: 18 February 1810 Witnesses: Peter and Martin Dewitt Probated: 23 April 1810

Peggy, We have one participant who is quite possibly a descendant of the William and Sarah Parker Groom of Bourbon Co KY who is matching up with two descendants of the Solomon Groom of the Clark Co KY area. If this is so, it is really significant and based on Calvin Oyler's research, William and Solomon would be first generation immigrants from England. The lines are distinctly different from descendants of the John Groom line out of Spotsylvania Co VA and the Robert Groom line out of King and Queen Co VA (mid 1700s), which are actually so close I would think they were brothers or 1st cousins.
My line is matching identically with the Robert and Susannah Seward Groom line out of K&Q VA (c1750). At this time I'm trying to find Groom or Grooms descendants from the men of Fentress Co TN (1800-1850) who may have gone on into Casey Co KY. One brother went on to Fields ILL with a son ending in Clackamas Co OR and another in nearby Portland. Just haven't found a participant yet to prove that the Casey Co and Fentress Co men were actually siblings. But I'm working on it! It would be terrific to find that my greatgrandfather (Fentress Co then Polk Co TN) had brothers in Casey Co KY. One researcher feels that the Casey Co Grooms were from the Abraham Groom line out of Adams Co Ohio, but I don't have a participant from that line yet to determine the accuracy of that research. I do know that I am NOT matching up to a Grooms line out of Pickaway Co Ohio, but as yet I don't know if we are talking about 3 distinct lines or not. This is sooo interesting.
We are using the male y-chromosome of descendants who carry the Groom/Grooms/Groomes surname at this time for our dna project as the marker values are passed from father to son. Please let me know if you have anyone interested.
Ann Groom Lenz 3-2011

Birth Virginia*
DNA connects Solomon & William

"Second census" of Kentucky 1800: a privately compiled and published by the genealogical Pub. Also, I have been unable to find a record of another Joseph Grooms in KY or MO that fit so I am forced to assume that they are one and the same.
Floyd Grooms- groomsfm@aol.com

GROOMSFM@aol.com
Sent : Sunday, December 7, 2003 12:00 AM
We are not sure that the Joseph Grooms who married Nancy Hutchinson is the Son of Solomon Grooms and Sarah Grooms. But---- Everyone seems to think so. So I am going along with it as I can always change it later if I have the solid proof I need. I do know that one Joseph Grooms was the son of Solomon Grooms and Sarah Grooms and that he was born about 1796-1800 and was listed an infant son in Solomon Grooms will in 1810 .
I have the original will of Solomon Grooms and it lists: Mary who married Archibald Danielle, Hannah who married Nathaniel (Nathan) Chaney. Richard who married Nancy Watts, William who married reportedly married Sarah "Sallie" Wood., Francis and Joseph both who were listed in will as being infants. The will also indicated that Richard was the eldest son and William was the 2nd surviving son
I have Abraham Grooms and William Grooms of Bourbon Co, KY. dec'd 1811 both of whom I consider them to be brothers to Solomon Grooms. In this respect Solomon Grooms and William Grooms were both in Washington Co, PA in 1783. Solomon was listed as having three sons and two daughters in Pennsylvania. This agrees with the children listed in his will in 1810 including the one son indicated as being born in between Richard and William and the two infants (Francis & Joseph) who had not been born at that time. That information gives me sufficient information on which to base the remark that I consider William Grooms and Solomon Grooms brothers. The other brother, Abraham Grooms, is another story which will have to be set forth later.
I have been searching for information as to the name of the dec'd son of Solomon Grooms for a long time and so far I have been met with zilch. I just recently have been going through my records to locate the family that has the name SPENCER listed. If it is William Grooms, the son of Solomon Grooms, it should narrow the search considerably for the parents of your Cynthia Grooms and Spencer Grooms. Wish me luck.
Cousin Floyd
PS: I will send you the siblings of Joseph Groom who married Nancy Hutchinson in the near future.

Several of us are trying to find the parents of Solomon Groom. born 1754, supposedly in Clark county KY and died there in 1810. Lately there was a
listing that he was in Washington Co PA with a brother. -wilmajay@aol.com

CHANEY / DAVNALL / GROOMS
Replies: 4
CHANEY / DAVNALL / GROOMS
BarbMartell (View posts) Posted: 10 Jun 1998 12:00PM GMT
Classification: Query
Edited: 13 Sep 2003
Surnames:
Searching info on Solomon Grooms who died 1810 Clark Cty, KY; or his siblings, Mary Davnall, Sarah Chaney, Sarah Grooms, Francis Grooms, Joseph Grooms, Hannah Chaney, Richard Grooms or William Grooms. All info appreciated. Thanks.
Query entered 3/9/97

Thanks :) I found that as well. It seems that the tree was spread apart...maybe 2 different wives at some point? I found siblings by the name of Sophie and a few others. It seems one child was lost in infancy as well. I am not sure where this goes back to, but I will continue searching. Thanks for your help :)
