I have seen Groats of African descent in the Canadian census records for Ontario in the 19th century. I found the information at www.familysearch.org
Hope this helps.

Mare Willison. What a strange name. Sounds old English or even Scot or Welsh. My Willison was Rhoda, who married Noah Whitehouse Coffman in 1830 in OH. Have no idea who were her people or where they lived before going to OH. Noah's people had been Mennonites in the Shenandoah Valley, VA. Their people had come from Switzerland. Anyway, Noah became a minister in The United Church of the Brethren in OH. For awhile, Noah was in Licking co., OH with his parents. He went to Fairfield Co., OH and later, he and Rhoda took their family to Clinton Co., IA. That is where Noah and Rhoda are buried. I have their obituaries. Would it be too much to ask you to look through your collection for this family? Noah and Rhoda were my 2nd great grandparents. I know nothing of Rhoda's family. Thank you so very much.
