Hi, John -

Are you still out there?

I am a descendant of William & Margaret (Johnson) Gritman through their son Thomas, and that is as far back as I have been able to go, so far. Do you have anything earlier?

Also, do you have anything about the family of Abigail Spragg/Sprague, Thomas' wife.

Thanks so much. This is a fascinating line.

Hello,

My husband is a direct descendant of Samuel G Williamson, the son of Theophylatic and Harriett Gritman Williamson. I need to prove that Samuel is the son of Harriett Gritman for eligibility into
the Mayflower Society. Do you know of any document that would prove the children of Harriett besides census records.

I appreciate your help!

If your offer still stands, I would be very interested. My great grandmother was Lila Maebert (Chapman) Bell. She was daughter of Clifford and Florence Grittman. I have a copy of two photographs. One photo is of Sam and Mary Grittman. The other photo is of a Chapman couple which states they are the paternal grandparents of Maebert. However, there are no names listed on photo. They must be the parents of Clifford Chapman.

Richard Gritman md Polly Terry on Long Island, NY

Hi:

The latest Hallock Genealogy update, called The 1992 Hallock Addendum, includes descendants of a couple called Richard Gritman (son of William) and Mary Polly Terry, on the basis that that Mary Polly was a child of Capt John Cleves/Cleaves Terry and Abigail Terry (both with same last name). A listing of several generations of Gritman descendants is included, based on that Polly Terry being a Hallock descendant.

I am questioning that connection because the Polly Terry who was baptized in Mattituck, Long Island, on 07/13/1788, as the daughter of John Cleaves and Abigail (Terry) Terry, was married to Henry Conklin on Jan 5, 1809, was referred to as his daughter Polly Conklin in John Cleaves Terry's 1823 will and was referred to as the half-sister of Benjamin King, son of Abigail Terry from her first husband, in his 1838 will as my "half-sister Polly, the wife of Henry Conklin".

There are web sites out that say they were married before she married Henry Conklin. But, the marriage records for her and Henry would have been expecetd to say Mrs Poly Gritman if a divorcee, and Poly Gritman, widow, if a widow; not Polly Terry.

I have no doubt that a William Gritman may have married a Polly Terry, but I would like to see what evidence there is that this Polly (Terry) Conklin, married to Henry Conklin from 1809 to (at least) 1838, (from age 21 to at least age 50) could have married William Gritman and had children.

Could there be another Polly Terry that was the wife of William Gritman?

Thanks for your support.

My name is Michael Gritman. I live in Minnesota and have been researching my family tree for a number of years. I believe there is a Uriah Gritman in my family tree. I do not have the documentation I need at my disposal right now to check to make sure. I have information back to 1652 in the US and further in Europe.

Gritman was originally Gutman/Guttman which means "Good Man" or "Great Man". This could explain the Greatman translation.

My email is mgritman@yahoo.com. Contact me later and I'll try to send you an email or an electronic document that you can examine.

Hi. My mother, who was a Gritman, also corresponded with Dr. June Berry back in 1978. My mothers father was Charles Wesley Gritman. His father was Thomas Henry Gritman. They all seem to come from Hempstead, LI. Are you familiar with this line?
I suspect that your Gritmans and my Gripmans are the same family. I also have some information from June Berry on the Gripmans, and she suspected that this was the same family (see my posting of March 17th). You might try looking up your people with the spelling of Gripman or Grittman. If I find anything that would be helpful, I'll let you know.

Gritmans and Gripmans

I am researching the Gripman line of my family tree. I suspect that the Gritmans and Gripmans are either the same family or related, with one side or the other making a spelling change for some reason. My direct Gripman ancestors, starting with my grandfather, are as follows: Orville Gripman (married Grace McKean Watson), Hiram J. Gripman (married Abbie Marella Mason), Harvey Gripman (married Catherine Miller), Uriah Gripman (married to Phoebe Macomber), and Uriah Gripman or Gritman (married to Rhoda). I think the next one may be Thomas Gritman, who married Abigail Spragg, William Gritman, and then another William Gritman. My family's origin in the US was in New York, particularly Dutchess County and Hempstead. Any thoughts or information about this would be greatly appreciated!

(I work across the street from the main branch.)

The work that he did was simply amazing: It boggles my mind to think of the time that he spent culling through mountains of records, taking meticulous notes, alphabetizing and otherwise organizing everything, and then typing hundreds upon hundreds of pages on a manual typewriter!

Being a direct Gritman descendant, though, I sorely missed the "Gritman volume" to which your message refers. I understand that your grandfather couldn't get this copied easily in 1926, but 75+ years have passed. If you still have the (sole?) copy, couldn't we get it copied now and added to the NYPL collection for posterity?

Even though your grandfather didn't cite sources (the standards were very different in those days), he left behind a treasure for those of us who have followed. A stunning achievement.

- Dick Fuhrman

The 1850 US Census shows Harriett a widow and head of household. Her mother, Hannah Gritman (79) is living with her, together with three sons: Robert (24), John (20), and Samuel (17). Also newlyweds, Ann [Williamson] Leonard (19) and William Leonard (22), my gr-gr-grandparents. James, who would have been 26-27 according to your statement, might have been an older son who already had moved out.

By 1860, it appears, Ann had died, leaving Grandma Harriett and William to raise Ann's three sons.

My grandmother, Ann [Leonard] Fuhrman, who still is alive at 101, remembers hearing about Theophylact (variously spelled) L. Williamson, her gr-grandfather. He was a goldbeater, and died in the 1830s (from the chemicals he worked with?) She believes that his middle name was "Lispenard". Does anyone know of a connection with the famous (Col. Leonard Lispenard) family?

From June Berry's _Gritmans of Long Island_ I found Harriet Gritman, born 28 Nov 1802 in NYC, daughter of James Gritman and Hannah Golden. On 10 July 1822 she married Theopyhlect [really!] Williamson and died on 24 Nov 1875.

I would be very interested in seeing a list of their children. My great-great grandfather was James Gritman Williamson, who died in Brooklyn at the age of 50 on 22 Aug 1873, but I don't know the names of his parents.

Thanks in advance for any efforts expended.

I only have a xeroxed copy of a part of it that my uncle, Robert Gripman, had. I know he was in touch with June Berry at one time, but he died over a year ago and I don't think he ever had the full book. Thanks!!!

Patty

Uriah, Phebe, and some of their children moved from N.Y. state to Michigan. They are buried in the Raisin Center Friends Cemetery, located in Raisin Township, Lenawee Co., Michigan, where they lived in 1850. Their children were also born in N.Y.
I am not related, but have photographed the gravestones in the cemetery near our home, and am trying to find out more about the people buried there.
Anne
