One of my husband's great-grandfathers was
Charles Augustus Greemore, who was born on September 26, 1857 in St. Mary's, KS and was given first communion at the St. Mary's Catholic Church. He married Lydia Alice Copeland (date unclear)and died February 25, 1940 in Lexington, Oklahoma. He was a Citizen Band Pottawatomi. His father was Francois Basil Gremore, who was born in 1809 in Vincennes, Indiana and spoke only French. He came to the Pottawatomi Reserve, with the Jesuits prior to 1853. He died July 04, 1963 at St. Mary's,Ks. Our information indicates that his father was Pierre Grimard, who died in Vincennes, Indiana and his mother Genevieve Colon. Of the last we haven't verified. As we are now researching the Greemores, we will have some "for sure" information from early day KS newspapers, etc. St. Mary's is still an active church; we hope to find many enties in their archives. We've also learned that the Pottawatomi ceded land to Notre Dame University in South Bend and the library archives have a great deal of material. We don't plan a trip to Indiana until after we
have most of the Kansas and Oklahoma research done. My husband and daughter are enrolled members of the Citizen Band Pottawatomi in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The tribe split into several groups: Wisconsin band, Citizen Band, and Prairie Band in Kansas.
I hope this information isn't too muddled. I will share as we gain more. I have appreciated what I've read today. Thanks, Sue. Christina Jameson McCurtain
