I do not know if our families are connected but I am ISO information regarding Michael Grillo, born in Monte SantAngelo, Italy October 24 1894 and passed away May 1969 in Mt. Vernon NY. Mr. Grillo is my great grandfather. he was married briefly to my great Gramma, Romilda aka Lillian D'Amico approx 1920-1922. They had a son, together, my Grandfather Nunzio Grillo (name on original Birth Cert, born 3/25/22 in Bridgeport Ct.) After my Gramma and Mr. Grillo divorced my gramma married my grandfather's Godfather, Raffaelle Cucco and a new birth cert was made showing my Grandfather as Nunzio Cucco. I would like to know more about Mr. Grillo and his ancestors. I have copies of Mr. Grillo's draft card and military exit questionnaire from WWI. Maybe anyone on this thread and I can compare notes and see if we can tie any loose ends up. :)

Did Giuseppe Grillo come over with anyone? Anthony or Tresa? Did Giuseppe stay in California. Not sure if we are talking about the same ancestors My family traveled from Penn in the early 1900s and ended up in the hills of Washington State by a small town called Tonasket.

My parents in the 70s traveled to Sicliy and found some of the Grillo family.

I don't think anyone kept in touch with the family they found in Italy.

I am searching Grillo family which came from Sicily in early 1900's. Giuseppe (Joseph) Grillo came through Ellis Island NY in March 1914; Andrea Grillo came to California via NY Ellis Island in 1924 sponsored by his son Giuseppe (Joseph) Grillo; they were fisherman out of Isola delle Femmine-Capaci-Terrasini area. I think Andrea's father was Alexander but the Annunciation from Sicilian to English I'm not sure of. But I am looking for that family back in Sicily. What I do know is about Giuseppe and Andrea after these two no one seems to know more as the family didn't speak of relatives back in Sicily to the children born here in California.

Hi
I have been recently searching family background. My grandfather MATTEO GRILLO came to the U.S.arrivng in Boston in 1905 at the age of 24. Originally from Sicily, Messina province, close to Spadafora. He married Maria Borghetti and the early cenus shows them living in Watertown, MA. There are other Grillo members of the family living for formerly living in Watertown, MA.
I don't know if this has any meaning for you. Did other sibilings of Matteo come to the U.S.?
I moved to Florida 5 years ago.
Joseph Ruggeri

Hello: My father's uncle was Mike Garavuso who invented the Manhattan Special drink along with another individual -- I think, a doctor. My grand-father was Frank Garavuso who lived on Metropolitan Avenue. My father, Rocco Garavuso died in 1987 and I'm sorry to say that all of my relatives that would have known your relatives are almost all deceased.
However, it was nice to see your note about my great-uncle, Mike. His brother, Frank, my grand-father died when I was about two -- about 1954. My parents were born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and, of course, Greenpoint was just next store, really. God bless.

Grillo surname comes from all over Italy. That's why I've had such a hard time tracing it. It's all over Rome as well (I've been there and Italians in Rome say: "Oh, Grillo is originally from Rome." Guess what Italians from Sicily say? "Oh, Grillos are originally from Sicily." And so on... It's actually pretty amusing/frustrating. So, you have a lot of Grillos from North/Mid/Southern Italy.

In Rome, they still have the palazzo of the Marquis di Grillo, which is located near the Colosseo. I think it's called Palazzo del Grillo.

As for Italians in Cuba, I read that Italians were recruited to fight in the Cuban war of independence and I think their passage was free to Cuba. Although, I don't think many actually came? I find it interesting that all my Grillo ancestors fought in war...so who knows?
1) Alfredo Del Grillo was sent to Himare, Albania from the governor of Corfu sometime in 1420 as a captain to recruit soldiers.

2) George Grillo a merchant from Venice was captured hostage at the sea by the Saracens in 1745. His merchandise was looted but he was able to escape together with the rest of the crew.

The document resides in the archives of state in Albania.
We are the only descendant Grillo family in Albania.
Since Don Antonio Gonzalez Grillo was married to Isabel de Armas two things are now obvious to me. First, the González Grillo as a two word last name is a Canary Islands surname. Second, De Armas is also a Canary Islands surname. Therefore, it is now my impression that indeed he and she were originally from the Canary Islands. Where they came from to the Canary Islands is a different matter.

I have further researched the subject where Don Antonio Gonzales Grillo came from originally. I have found out that the De Armas (Isable de Armas was his wife) surname also comes from the Canary islands.

I think now it is more or less very probable they were originally from Canarias. Since Don Antonio was in the Spanish military it is also consonant with the "Levas" the Spanish Crown imposed on the Canary Islands by which menas they forced the Canarias into the militay.
