Do you know when and if they had children? My mother is Williams's granddaughter. William married Amy Harris and had one daughter, Joyce June born 1 April 1925.
Illegitimate child of James Grieve

According to the birth record of my husband's great grandfather, Alexander Stewart, he was found to be the illegitimate child of Catherine Stewart and "James Grieve, Hired? (or Hand?) at Runningburn in the County of Roxburgh". I know that Alexander was born in 1860 Lauder in Berwickshire. I have found two James Grieves in the 1861 census who I think are most likely to be the father. One lived in Lauder and one lived in Stitchell. Is there any way to figure out which was the father? Has anyone researching this family found stories of an illegitimate child?

Hi there

Have just seen your post from way back. I too am researching the Grieve family. From Perthshire, later moved to Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire. Peter Grieve my 3x Great Grandfather born 1801 married Christina Hepburn born 1804. Their son Peter Grieve born 1840 is my 2x GG, he married Mary Kirkland. They had three daughters. Mary died in 1876 2 years after my GG Margaret was born., I've been unable to trace Peter after her death. I know his children were split amongst family members. It was noted on Margaret's marriage certificate that he was deceased, this was in 1896. Any info on this family would be appreciated.

thanks

Mary

Your Great Aunt Avril was also my Great Aunt Avril! - but in my case by way of her marriage to my 'blood' relative, John Keevil.
I remember visiting 'Great Aunt Avril' as a child, in her home in Robertsbridge, long after John had died. I have just inherited a number of his personal things as well as a few photographs. None of Avril, although I am sure that someone in the family has one or more.
William Tom Worgan GRIEVE died Sunday, March 4 2012, in Seattle. He was born in Bo'ness Scotland on August 11 1924 to Lewis PATERSON and Christina (Dawson) GRIEVE. During WWII he served proudly with both the Black Watch and Glasgow Highlanders. Immigrating to the United States in 1947, he became a citizen in 1954. He married Eleanor Shirley UTTERBACK on May 4 1951 in Seattle. Better known as Tommy, he was very active in promoting the sport of soccer in the Puget Sound area through coaching, journalism, and broadcasting. Tommy was a strong voice among many in founding the region's youth soccer programs as well as being a very active Boy Scout leader. Retiring after 29 years with the Boeing Company, Tommy and Shirley enjoyed extensive cruising worldwide, finding the Alaskan excursions the most enjoyable. He is survived by his wife; two sons: Robert James GRIEVE (Julie) and Willian Charles GRIEVE (Sandra); two daughters: Shirley Jo MILLER (Denny) and Janice Jean HILBER; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews in Australia and Great Britain. Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers (Gordon, Lewis, and Emerson), and one daughter; Laurel Ann RAYMOND. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the American Lung or the American Heart Association. A gathering will be held at Camp Long in West Seattle on Saturday March 31st., from Noon to Three PM.
published in The Seattle Times from March 18 to March 25, 2012

Honestly I don't know where they resided and that has been the stumbling block regarding the family. James was born around 1884 and in the Scottish Census he just lists his place of birth as Ireland. It was the family that old me that he resided in Northern Ireland but didn't know where. Wish I could have helped. Looks like another brick wall sorry.

Thanks for reply, as you rightly suggest I have come across a lot of info regarding the Grieve family and have already been in touch with Ian McFarlane. Ann Rodger Grieve was my GGGM And her daughter Mary Hay "Roberts" must have taken her mothers married name which was the cause of a lot of my concerns tracing that lineage. I know i will not be able to trace Mary's father as it states on her birth certificate she was illegitmate. Please have a look at my tree to see if there is anything else we can share.

Best Wishes

Billy Blackwood

Hi sgr 1ff1th

I've traced my ancestors back to Adam Grieve and Margaret Paterson. I received alot of detailed info from Joyce Grieve, but have not been able to verify it any further back from Adam. I know he had a brother John (of Deloraine), but I cannot find records showing who their parents were. I would be very interested if you have come up with anything concrete. I'm afraid I don't have a worldwide subscription. Many thanks, Lynn

Have had the photograph dated - it was taken between 1931 and 1937. She is aged between late 20s and 40s, so would have a date of birth between 1891 - 1909. Of course, Grieve could be a married or unmarried name. Also believe the photo may have been taken in West London.

Hi Billy b
Just happened to be looking in ancestry when I came on your message, perhaps you may have this info by now.John Grieve was born about 1800, in Kirkmichael, Ayrshire, but the family lived mostly at Dunure a small fishing village in Ayrshire. he married Mary Andrews 2/7/1826 in the Maybole district and they had 6 children, the youngest being Ann Rodger Grieve. Ann eventually moved to Dunoon and her mother lived there with her. Ann had 2 children, David(b 1836) and Mary(b1865) before later marrying. I came across a post by a descendant of David grieve on a maybole website (can't remember it exactly, but could look it up). His name was Ian MacFarlan and I could give you his email address if you are interested.
My ancestor was John and Mary's son John Grieve, born 1832. Hope this helps, you can contact me direct on eunicewilson2002@yahoo.com.au
Bye Eunice

Isabella Grieve (born abt 1780 Warkworth) and John and Robert Grieve (born 1780s / 1790s: Widdrington)

Hello!

Do any of the readers recognise any of these people? The places are both in Northumberland, England.

Isabella married a William Hedley at Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland, in 1806 and when two of their children were baptised she said that she was a native of Warkworth, Northumberland. In the 1851 & 1861 Censuses in Co Durham she said that she was born in Morpeth - which may be a reasonable approximation when you're 40 / 50 miles away. She was born about 1780 - based on Census returns.

John and Robert Grieve both had children in Tynemouth, Northumberland, in about 1810 / 1811 and they both said they were natives of Widdrington. I believe Isabella and these two men are related but I don't know how. Warkworth and Widdrington are adjacent parishes. There were two Grieve families in Warkworth in the 1770s and 1780s but they didn't baptise these children in the parish church. They may have been non-conformists and not had their children baptised in the Anglican churches.

Any help would be much appreciated.

David Richardson
Hello Ellen,
My grandfather on my mother's side was Matthew Barr Grieve.
He was born in Seaforth Ontario about 1865.
His grandfather came as an infant from Scotland in 1830's and landed in Nova Scotia. There are many Grieves in Seaforth, Ontario. We visited there several years ago and went to the graveyard and the Presbyterian Church there.
At 15 our grandfather moved with his family to Buffalo North Dakota where they farmed. There are relatives there now.
My grandfather came to Colville, WA and taught school and became School Supt. where he met my grandmother. While teaching and supt school he studied medicine at the University of Oregon. After completing Medical School he practiced medicine in Colville but them moved with his family to practice medicine. Three of his five children became doctors.
I have more accurate details and I am relating the informatiion above from memory.
I live in Seattle, Washington
