Surnames: Gribbon - Gribbin - Gribben
I am trying to find out information about Michael and Catherine Gribbon - they lived in Limerick and show up on the 1901 and 1911 census. My great-grandfather was one of their sons. I thought there were only 3 boys, but it turns out there were 9 children. As far as I know only the 3 boys came to America - John - Michael and Owen. The rest were Marie, Mark, Louisa, Catherine, Annie and Bridget. My great-great grandfather, Michael was born in Tullylish, Down, Ireland. I think his father's name was Owen. I have noticed that it is spelled differently on differen documents, sometimes Gribbon other times Gribbin. My great-great grandfather Michael married a woman named Catherine Duffy, in Banbridge, Co. Down, Ireland in 1871. If anyone can provide any other information it would be greatly appreciated. Regina Gribbon-Caburis

Hello
My husband's family of Gribbons were also from Co Down. His gt gt grandfather George Gribbon was born c 1834, and served in the Royal South Down Light Infantry before settling in Sheffield, England in 1856. I just wondered if there is a link with your Down Gribbon family. I believe George Gribbon's father was called Bernard.
Kind regards
Sue

Hi Sue, I have only been able to go back as far as 1849. That was my great-great grandfather Michael Gribbon. Do you know of any relatives by the name of Michael? Maybe a brother to George? I'm still trying to find connections. There were alot of Gribbon's in Northern Ireland in the 1800's. I have also noticed that sometimes the spelling is wrong in-en as well as on. I'll let you know if I'm able to find any more connections. Regina

Hi Regina
Sorry, I can't help you with your puzzle. I haven't yet discovered why George chose to move to Sheffield, although I suspect that he may have had family in the area. I know that there were other Irish Gribbons (with a variety of spellings)in Sheffield in the 1860's. George's marriage certificate indicated that his father's name was Bernard, and I have found a Bernard Gribbon (with family) living in Burnley, Lancashire in the mid/late 1800's. I have not yet proved a connection, but the ages would be appropriate. Hope this helps somewhat.
Regards
Sue
