I am looking for information related to the Gribbon family, particularly in the U.S. My grandfather, James J. Gribbon, born 1866 in NY City and lived in New Jersey. I'd like to trace his line in Ireland, England or Wales. Contact me at gribbon4@aol.com

I don't know if my first reply went through. My ancestor, Daniel, was born in 1843 in Belfast and married Maria Ross. Date to the U.S. is unknown. Their son, James J. Gribbon was born Nov. 5, 1866 in New York City. Good Luck! Let me know if you find more information.

I am doing research on my grandmother, Mary Ann Gribbon Wilson. She was born in Ireland on May 27, 1878. She and several sisters came to the USA. She came in 1892 but I am not sure whether her sisters came at the same time. She located somewhere in Pennsylvania (around Lawrence County I believe). Her fathers name was John and I think her mother's name may have been Mary (not sure). One of her sisters was Sarah and a second was nicknamed "Mil." I recall my father, Charles Wilson, saying that she came from County Down, Ireland but I am not sure.

If this rings a bell with any family information over there let me know and we can swap histories - going back in Ireland and forward in USA. Hope to hear from you.

Lois Wilson

My farther told me the story that the gribbon name came from spain, when the spanish armada took on sir francis drake, some of the ships trying too get back to spain crashed on the rocks on the coast of ireland and some of the men stayed there. some were killed but the gribbon was a doctor and they spared his life.

My Great grandfather was also Daniel Gribbon, born 1843, in Belfast and died about 1867, probably in New York. He was married to Maria Ross (1834 - after 1910). I also have new information on her parents and some stories. My grandfather was their son James Joseph Gribbon, born 1866, died 1943. Please contact me if you can. Gribbon@dslextreme.com

I heard the same story as the origin of the 'black Irish' - Irishmen with darker hair and complexions like I have, including a birthmark of supposedly spanish origin.
