I am tracing William Gribble who came to the USA in 1848 from Cornwall and settled in Dodgeville, Iowa County, Wisconsin. He married Elizabeth Bailey. They lived in the Cambourne, Cornwall, area prior to the trip to the USA. He is my G-G-G Grandfather. My line eventually moved to Idaho.

I have seen this William Gribble mentioned in various documents during the course of my research. As far as I can tell, there were at least three William Gribbles in SW Wisconsin during the mid 1800s:

One who lived in Platteville/Grant County
One who lived in Mineral Point/Iowa County (my ancestor)
One who lived in Dodgeville/Iowa County

One of them (I do not recall which one except that it was not my ancestor) was killed in the Civil War.

There is quite a bit of genealogical info at the SW Wisconsin Room at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Library (http://www.uwplatt.edu/~swwis/swguide.htmlx). [One very valuable source for my research in the SW Wisconsin Room was the Mineral Point Tribune, which contained several marriage and death notices concerning my ancestors.]
Two other places I have not visited personally but which may be of interest are the Iowa County Courthouse and the Iowa County Genealogical Society (http://www.friendsnfamily.net/wiiowagensoc/index.html).

Some of the info I have in my notes on Gribbles from SW Wisconsin:

There was a William Gribble who died in Iowa County on 2.18.1902.

A William Gribble married Elizabeth Williams in Iowa County (Dodgeville) on 8.24.1871. William's occupation was listed as miner.
A William Gribble married in Iowa County on 10.19.1890
A William F. Gribble married in Grant County on 3.29.1897.
A William H. Gribble married in Iowa County on 11.30.1889 (my ancestor).
A William H. Gribble married in Grant County on 9.29.1856.
A Wiliam Gribble married in Grant County on 4.08.1866.

A William Gribble was given a divorce from Fannie M. Gribble in 1872. Shortly after their marriage in Mineral Point (in 1869 or 1870), William went to work in Colorado and California. He returned to Mineral Point in the fall of 1871. They had one child--William Albert--born October 19, 1870. The family was apparently from Mineral Point, and had moved to Mifflin, Wisconsin.

There is a William A. Gribble - more than likely the William Albert mentioned above - who died in Mifflin on 12.10.1904 at age 34. His wife was Ester (1868-1940).

A William Gribble was found guilty of forceable entry in Dogeville. [I remember reading the details of the case; it had something to do with breaking into a house. I don't have any dates in my notes, unfortunately.]

There is an entry for Thomas Gribble in the book History of Iowa County, Wisconsin (p. 969):

"Thomas Gribble farmer, Sec 35; P.O. Mineral Point. Mr. G. is a Republican and owns 467 acres of land, valued at $35 per acre; born in Waldwick Township, this county. Married Susan Thomas in 1862; she was born in England; they have ten children - Edward, Catherine, Mary, John, William, Joseph, Ellen, Charles, Harvey and Elmer."

Though further research mave prove me wrong, at present I do not believe the Mineral Point, Platteville or Dodgeville William Gribbles were related.

Good luck with your research,

Dear AMG,

Thank you for the information and additional sources you suggested.

The Wm. Gribble who died 2/18/1902 is my G-G grandfather, son of the Wm. Gribble (Sr.) I referenced in my original message. Wm. Gribble, Sr., died in 1860. His wife, Elizabeth Bailey Gribble died in 1870. They are buried at the Dodgeville Cemetery.

The marriage to Elizabeth Williams in 1871 was also my G-G Grandfather. This was the second marriage for both. His first wife, Nannie, died in 1865. William Jr., and Nannie are also buried at the Dodgeville Cemetery.

I will be reviewing the rest of the data you shared for other possible connections.

Thank you again. Willard

Bill,
My direct line that came to Idaho was one of four children. Of the other three, only one was married and had children. The names Suzie and Shusie have not yet been found in my research.

In searching immigration information for my Gribble line (who also went from Cornwall to Wisconsin), I came across a William and Elizabeth Gribble listed as paasengers on a ship that came to America in 1848. William and Elizabeth are listed as 51 yrs old. If you want more info, feel free to email me.

FYI Also listed are Elizabeth, 24. John, 16. Mary Anne, 15. Grace, 13. and George, 10.

Surnames: Gribble
I am recording Civil War burials in Marietta National Cemetery on findagrave and came across the name:

William H. Gribble
Lieut Co E 25th Wisconsin
Resident of Platteville, Wisc.

He was killed in the battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864, in or near Decatur, Ga. I have not found his burial place. Since he was an officer, his remains may have been sent home for burial.

Do you have a burial record or headstone for him?

Janet,

The William Gribble that I am researching did not serve in the Civil War and died in 1902 at Dodgeville, Iowa County, WI. He is buried at the local cemetery there.

Sorry I could not be of assistance.

Willard Gribble.

Can you tell me a little bit more on William and Elizabeth (Bailey) Gribble? I am there GGGG Granddaughter, but I have yet to find anything out about their parents or siblings. Not sure if I have any information on the ship that they came on.

Thank You

Deb
