Hello. I'm not connected to Gribbin but a family of that name lived next door to my folks in Whitehaven before and during WW1.

What a small world! Do you know their names? I've been madly searching for leads on the remaining Gribbin/en families scattered throughout England, Scotland & Ireland. They had quite large families too, so there'd be quite a few more to be found. My father was born in Billingham, & I was born in Middlesbrough England, but now live in Australia. Be'l

I have an Elizabeth GRIBBIN in my family tree b.1880 Whitehaven, in Whitehaven in the 1901 census as a servant in an Inn and married James LOWERY in 1905. The marriage certificate says her father was John GRIBBIN, a tailor. I can't find Elizabeth or her father on earlier censuses and can't find her with her husband or children in the 1911.
Any connection to your Whitehaven Gribbins?

Re: Gribbin families from Scotland, Whitehaven, Newcastle, Gateshead, Middlesbrough
Hi,
My husband originally posted this message, because my maiden name is Gribbin, so I hope we can eventually link up our families. So far, my Gribbin's were mostly hauliers, innkeepers, & labourers, but you never know.
I've searched for your Elizabeth Gribbin in the censuses, & found that there is a John Gribbin, 32 yrs, a tailor, born Isle of Man, living at 4 Kitchins Bdgs, Catherine St, Whitehaven in 1890. His wife is Margaret, 32 yrs, born Whitehaven. Children are Mary A, 11 yrs, Sarah, 7 yrs, Alice, 5 yrs, Maggie, 2 yrs, & Elizabeth, 8 months - all were born Whitehaven. The surname is mistranscribed as "Grilben", so it would have been harder to find.
I can't find them yet in 1891, but by 1901 there are two more children named Edward (14 yrs), & Joseph (10 yrs). As you know, Elizabeth is known as "Lizzie" in 1901; she's a servant at 24 Market Place, Bird In Hand Inn.
By 1911 Margaret Gribbin is a widow; her son, Joseph, is still living with her.
I hope this gives you a good start. Please let me know if I can help you any more. If you give me the names & ages of Elizabeth & James' children, or other details, I can try to find them in 1911 for you.
Kind regards, Be'l
