Oral history tells me that our Alexander J Gribben came from
Wheeling West Virginia. Research shows me his father, Alex Gribben
located in the Wheling, West Virginia Directories 1888-1893. Further
research shows Alexander Gribben married to Catharine Gibney on 5/17/1870 in
Ohio County, West Virginia. Does this sound familar to anyone?

Laura; My gg grand mother is Deborah Gribben she married Truman Smith before 1860 in Lubeck, Wood Co. West Virginia. The first three children were born there. My G grand mother Arvilla was born in Wheeling, West Virginia. in 1867. I have not been able to find any info on Debra. One of the children from Truman's first marriage Eliza Edna Smith remained in Wood co. West Virginia.

Are you still out there, and searching for this information? I just discovered this resource and your posting. Alexander Gribben was my great-great-grandfather (I think that's right) who was naturalized an American citizen in Wheeling in October of 1876. I was born in that area and still have Gribben relatives there. What more do you know?

Truman Smith was My G-G-Grandfather. He was born in Massachusetts in 1809. His first marriage was to Eleanor Gamble. They had 9 children, the youngest being Margaret Olive Smith born in 1850. She is My G-Grandmother. Eleanor died in about 1856. I think Truman married Debora in 1858. They Had 4 Children. John, Charles, William and Arvilla. I had most of this information from notes My Grandmother left Me. I've then made a long study of the family Geneology. I've tracked Truman from Mass>Penn>Virginia( West Virginia>Arkansas where I believe He died sometime in the 1870's in Arkansas or Desha County. I've done this through Census records and other information found on ancestry. I don't know alot about Debora except that She shows up in the 1860 census in Wood County, Virginia with Truman, in the 1870 census in Desha County, Arkansas with Truman and the in the 1880 census in Desha County, Arkansas but without Truman and She still has all the children. In ckecking the census, You'll find His name spelled Trueman, Truman and Treeman Smith. You have to be a bit of a detective. I've also been able to track Arvilla's Children. She Married a James Taylor Walsh, Had 2 children, Celina and John. Arvilla died in 1893 in Arkansas. I'll be glad to help in any way I can. My E-mail is unclebillhallberg@yahoo.com. I think the Ancestry.com E-mail address is still My old one. ........ Thanks.........Bill Hallberg
