Re: Grgich/Croatia,yugoslavia
I have recently started researching my family heritage. My great grandfather was Leo (Lenart) Grgich. I have found that he arrived in the states in 1912 with I believe his brothers Stepan, Josef, Malo (Matthew I was told). They went first it seems to Niagra Fall, NY and also to Michigan and Canton, Ohio. I believe my great grandfather was born in 1882 in Austria or Yugoslavia.

Re: Grgich/Croatia,yugoslavia
I just received an obituary for our family the Grasha's. My great, great grandfather's (Frank Grasha Sr.) sister's name is listed as Agnes Grgich. Your posted message interested me because my family lived in Rankin, Braddock, PA. Would you have an Agnes in your family?

Re: Grgich/Croatia,yugoslavia
I have seen an Agata in the Social Security Death index. Do you know what her death date was, or is there anyone in your family that knows if her maiden name was Grasha, or her brothers names Frank and Charles? Would anyone in your family have an obituary for her? I would be interested in learning more about her if she is related. Thank you for your response.

Re: Grgich/Croatia,yugoslavia
Hello Mary Ann, You mentioned in one of your posts that your GRGIC (from the male given name Grga, which means Gregory, the IC ending means "son of") came from the little town of Zagreb. Uhh, Zagreb is the capital of Croatia, and has a population today of about 1 million people! However most likely they did not come from Zagreb. Most often when I help folks find their roots and hear "my family came from Zagreb (or some other large, well known city) they in fact did not. There was little reason to leave large cities as people who lived there had a economic opportunity. The vast majority of our ancestors from Croatia, were seljaci.... peasants. And even the Croatian peasants in those days had 4 years of schooling, so they learned the 3 Rs! One name I noticed that you mentioned was George GRGIC (the H was added in the US, as the C in this case has a / over it giving it CH sound in Croatian) In Croatian Geroge could be Jure (Jura), Juro, Juraj (Juray) Ellis Island records have at least 8 arrivals by that name.... and none are from Zagreb! The closest match based on your "suspected" birthdate is one arr in 1913 age 32 from Bosnia FYI Yugoslavia did not exist in 1880! The Kingdom of Croatia existed from 925 AD to 1918, when the Empire (Austria-Hungary) that Kingdom was part of was defeated in WW I. In 1918 Croatia became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Then in 1929 the king declared a dictatorship and renamed the country Yugoslavia, which ceased to exist in 2003. Croatians voted themselves out of Yugoslavia in 1991. Robert Jerin Croatian Heritage Museum Cleveland Ohio http://www.croatia-in-english.com/rj/

Re: Grgich/Croatia,yugoslavia
Yes Marge, I knew Agata (or Agatom)Grgich. She was my Great-grandmother. I remember her when she lived at her granddaughter Dolores' home at 153 Camp Ave in Braddock, PA. I've been doing some family tree research of my own, and I know that Agata was married to George Grgich (or Grgic) in 1899, and her maiden name was Grasa (or Grasha). Her SS# was 168-50-3836, and she was born on 2/3/1880, and died on 3/4/1977. Her parents were Ivan Grasha/Grasa (1845-1915) and Barbara/Bara/Ana Petrina (1851-1914). Her brothers and sisters were Roza, Mara, Eva, Frank, Joe, and Carlo (or Drago or Charles). Her children were Caroline (or Dragica), Matthew, Ljuba (who only lived 1 year), Molly (also Ljuba), Joseph, Stephen, Barbara, Ivan, and Mary (or Mara). Caroline was my Grandmother who at age 16 married Isadore Peretic. Their youngest son Edward (or Sonny) is my dad, which also gives me the name Peretic. I can also give you some info on George Grgich. The spellings of his name may be: George/Grga/Grgu/Grega and Grgich/Grgic. His SS# was 174-03-6446, and he was born on 3/10/1881 and died on 6/5/1966. His parents were Janko Grgic (1846-1893, died of TB) and Ana Hrastov (1847-1912). The only siblings I have listed for George were Eva, Kata, and Roza. I have a nice family picture of the Grgich's, but unfortunately I can't include it just yet with this post. It shows George, Agata, and their children. I hope this information is helpful to you, or anyone else in our family. By the way, my name is James/Jim.

Re: Grgich/Croatia,yugoslavia
How time seems to just fly. I'd be happy to have any more information you could give me from Frank Grasha's obituary, or other sources. He was my Great-grandmother Agnes/Agata Grasha/Grgich's brother. The info I have is that their parents were Ivan Grasha and Barbara Petrina who had 7 children named: Agata/Agnes, Drago, Joseph, Frank, Roza(Cukina), Eva(Bakale), and Mara(Ferenac). It's possible Ivan Grasha lived between 1845-1915 and wife Barbara from 1851-1914, although I can't be certain on those dates. Agata lived from Feb 3, 1880 through March 4, 1977. I remember my family (her grandson Edward Peretic) would pick her up and take her to Catholic church in Rankin. At that time, she lived with her granddaughter Dolores Seigh's family at 153 Camp Ave in Braddock, PA. I have pictures of the home Agata and George Grgich used to live in at 9 Oak Alley in Rankin as well as their tombstone in Braddock Catholic Cemetery. Be glad to hear from you.... Jim Peretic
