Hi all, i thought i'ld share a small passage from an interview conducted on Rarotonga by LDS Geneology dept. and my great grandmother in 1973 about the Geneology of Tribes from the island of Rakahanga Cook Islands.
My Great grandmothers name was Maggie Takai (nee Maggie Greig - aka Rotana Maggie Greig)
Interviewer: Where did you get the name 'Greig' from?
My G/Grandmaother replies:
"No toku tupuna tane ko...." (she started her answer in cook islands language which translates"My Grandfather who is" than she continues in english)" .....Mr. William Greig. Mr. William Greig was a Scot. he came to Fanning Island in 1855. William Greig settled at English harbour and married Teanau about 1857. Their first child George Bickwell Greig was born 1863 at English Habour Fanning Island and married Temu Tetipa of Rakahanga 1896; and their children are; George Hughey Greig born 1885, died auguest 14 1956; Howard Greig was born 1888, died 1923 august 27; William Greig was born 1890; Maggie Greig (myself) born 1892 January 11; Jenny Greig born 1894; Lizzy Greig born 1896; David Greig Born 1896 birth place Honolulu.
Mr William Greig was an Ayrshire Scot. He came on a Trading vessel with Captain John English to Fanning Island and they called the Harbour after Captain John English, 'English Habour' Fanning Island and they lived there. On Captain John English's death the Island was handed to William Greig. That's how they settled on the Island. Father got his working gangs from Gilbert, Manihiki, Rakahanga and Pukapuka. We came over to Rakahanga by the steamship Uporu, 1899. 1900 Howard went to school. 1902 i went to school. George Bickwell Greig, my father, died in New Zealand. His cemetery was at vaikumete, New Zealand."
Well theres just a bit of history from my great grandmother (grand daughter to William Greig)
