I am looking for information on my Grandfather, Charles Richard Gregory. Family legend has it that he was a "Remittance Man". He told my grandmother, Julia, he was born 17 Dec 1854, in El Paso Texas, but from phrases he used in letters he wrote, he sounds British (English).
He shows up in Sacramento, California about 1888 on Voters lists and is living with a Doctor on G Street between 10th and 11th Streets (City Directory), He was working for the Chesley family who owned a Store in Old Town Sacramento. In 1889 he is listed in Sacramento Business Directory as an Upholsterer on 8th Street. He also worked for Bell and Greer's Auctioneers in Sacramento on J Street. On 7 Feb 1890 he married Julia Rose Bower, also in Sacramento.
They had 6 children.Julian Gregory, My Father #6, was born 29 Oct 1901 at 618 Adeline Street in Oakland California. This was 4 months after Charlie went away.
In June 1901, "About 4:15 pm, Charlie went away." (Written by Julia in the margin of Julia and Charlie's account book) .Soon after he left, we have an Envelope, no letter left, from Los Angeles, address is General Delivery, Then a mention in a letter from Julia's sister Clara in 1911 that he was in Mississippi, and she forwards a photo of Charlie sent to her at the "Home Address" in Warren, Missouri. I have found nothing after this point and I have been searching for decades. I have found many Gregory families, but can't find any trace of Charlie.
We have even tried DNA on Ancestry with a direct Male line Great Grandson and haven't found anything. Forwards or Backwards!
What can I try? Anyone have any ideas?
The photos are 1. Charles R Gregory. I believe this is the photo forwarded to Julia from her sister.
2. A tintype in a keepsake covered frame that latches. It has gold around the photo edge. This is marked as Charlies Mother.
3. Julian and Goldie Gregory Wedding Photo.
Any help appreciated,
Dorothy
