Anyone who has been researching this surname knows, there are numerous theories but precious few pieces of evidence that tie any given Gregory with being one of the original Gregorys who brought this surname to America.
There are family stories and anecdotal pieces that a 'Richard Gregory' arrived in Virginia as early as 1620 and a colorful story about a 'Daniel MacGregor' who was born C. 1672 and was shanghaied, with his brother while still a boy. He jumped ship in Boston harbor in the late 1600's. No doubt, there are others from lines not connected with mine.
I thought it might be beneficial to do a roll call of all the known Gregory's (all variants of the surname spelling) that have immigrated to the USA prior to 1800 and in particular making mention of known documents that verify these people. Dates and ports of departure and arrival would be beneficial along with any other paper that may be known.
I'm sure I'm not the only person to have hit a brick wall in early east coast USA, may there is a scrap of evidence out there that will help us in jumping the Atlantic back to the UK or Europe??
Cheers,
Michael Gregory
