Classification: Query
Surnames: Gregory and Haynes
Anne E. Haynes, the 1st wife of Philip Edwin Gregory, was not the daughter of Private Adam Haynes/Haines/Heins Sr. of Bulter's Rangers. She was the daughter of Adam B. Haines Jr. (Dec. 4, 1795 -Feb. 23, 1884) and Magdalene Schram (1795-.Nov. 15, 1867). Private Adam Haynes/Haines/Heins Sr. of Bulter's Rangers. was her paternal grandfather.
Anne was the 3rd of 8 known children to Adam B. and Magdalene Haynes. She was born on September 27, 1822 on the family homestead and Crown grant to Private Adam (her grandfather) Lot# 8, Concession #1, Louth Twp., Lincoln Co. (now St. Paul Street West, St. Catharines). She died on April 08, 1855 on her father-n-law's farm, Lot 7, Concession 3, Louth Twp, Lincoln Co., (Now 7th Street, St. Catharines). She was buried roughly 120 ft south of the house on the SOUTH Gregory Family Cemtery (as opposed to the NORTH Gregory Public Cemetery, both were on the same farm). Though no gravestone now exists, I was shown the site by by Joseph Whitty in August 2012. It is now on his farm, his father having bought the north portion of the fomer Phillip Gregory homestead in 1911 and my paternal grandmother, Catherine "Kate" Workman (later Haynes) having bouth the north portion in October 1913. Mr. Whitty, who is now 88, asserts that in about 1946 his father, Charles Whitty, showed him the remains of the broken stones on SOUTH Gregory Family Cemetery and instructed him never to plough there as there were still several bodies there. His fatehr also said words to the effect of "The Haynes [i.e., my grandmother and her 3 sons, who were the immediate neighbours) would be quite upset because one their kin is buried here as well." Since the only Haynes to marry a Gregory was Anne E. Haynes, who married Phillip Edwin, I can only assume that she is one of those still buried on the site.
By the way, Anne's paternal grandfather, Private Adam Haynes/Haines/Heins of Butler's Rangers was born August 5, 1749 on Lot 332, Beseck, namely Basic Creek (called after 1815 Westerlo, now Thayer's Corners),, Albany Co. on the Western Manor of Manor Rensselaerswyck, New York Province. His parents were either squatters of tenents of the Van Rensselaer patroons. Adam died in March 1814 on his homestead, Lots #21 and 22 in Conc. 7, Grantham Twp, (now St. Paul Street West, St. Catharines). He and his wife Elizabeth Froelick (umlaut on the O being represented by E in English) along with roughly 20 other family members are buried on the homestead in the Haynes Cemetery.
