Greenslet Genealogy Folder at Bennington Museum

HUGE find here for any researchers of Greenslet or Greenslit families. Bennington Museum has the research notes of Norman E. Greenslet who created a typescript genealogy of the Davis / Greenslit families . These complement the card file drawers of names which the Museum also has in its collection as well as a file folder of other Greenslet information. If you are researching this family, you need to check out this collection.

Sarah (not MANNING) married John Greenslit c. 1735

On a theory that the maiden name of Sarah, wife of John Greenslit (1712-1760), was Sarah MANNING, for over 60 years Greenslit researchers have been trying to find any document proving that she was Sarah MANNING. The marriage record does not exist in published Connecticut vital records.

When and by whom the idea that she was a MANNING first started is unknown, but it has been used by many as a fact, when there has never been a whit of documentation to support the MANNING theory.

Recently (Oct 2011) new information has been received indicating that John Greenslit married Sarah GRANGER. I am waiting to receive a copy of the original document (the will of Thomas Granger, Sarah's father) from the Connecticut Historical Society. When the will arrives and if it clearly states she is Sarah, wife of John Grinslet (sic), I will make a formal announcement that John's wife Sarah has been identified.

Helen Greenslit Graves

Truman Franklin Greenslit (1852 - 1927)

I am searching for Truman Franklin Greenslit/Greenslet in the 1870 US census. He was born in Readsboro, VT but eventually lived his adult life in Wallingford, CT. He is with his parents in the 1860 census (although mistranscribed) and is in Wallingford, CT and married in the 1880 census. I believe he was married in Cheshire, CT on 30 October 1873, so it is possible that he was in Connecticut before that time. His wife apparently lived in Readsboro, VT in 1870 and then her parents were living in Cheshire, CT by 1880 so it could be that Truman Greenslet was still living in VT (or elsewhere)when he married Ellen Rice in Cheshire CT, perhaps going to her parents' new residence to do so. Can anyone find Truman Frankln Greenslit ANYWHERE?

Eliza A. Greenslet (1841 - 1924) married Francis E. Amadon (1840 - 1911). They had five children, with four still alive in 1910. According to federal census information, they most often lived in the Bennington, VT area, but also lived at one point in Troy, NY. I have the names of all five children, but do not have the death dates of two of them. One of the death dates must be before 1910. The two children for whom I need additional information are George F. Amidon (1867 - ?) and Jennie Amidon (1872 - ?) I find both of these children in the 1880 census, but can not find records for either of them beyond that point.

Is this the same James Greenslit who was living in Bennington, Vermont through the early 1800s? Is there any proof as to whom his children were? I am searching for proof of the parentage of Benjamin Greenslit (among others) who lived in Bennington and Readsboro, VT in the early 1800s.

I think it would be really worthwhile to pursue the possible Mormom angle. If you check out my Hines/Wollam/Schumacher/Sondey tree you'll find all that I've got on Jerusha. You will also see that I post her father's name as James.... but I also include a note that this is just speculation... although many researchers believe that this is the most likely scenario. I have also listed Emily More as a possible daughter of Jerusha.... what do you think?

Rice, Cheshire, Conn
Bertie N. Greenslet, Cheshire, Conn
George F. Greenslet, Wallingford, Conn

Most of these individuals wrote short poems or dedications and dated them. I would be happy to scan and share these with anyone who is interested in these individuals.

That was probably me, Susan Kossey. Both Charles Kelley and Fannie Walker are buried in Woodford Cemetery, Derbyshire, VT.

Apparently, he named his parents as Alexander Kelley and Jerusha Greenslit. She was left a widow for a long time - and so it appears that there was a relationship - but not sure if he was the same Alexander Kelley that left with a group of Mormon's to Utah. Apparently, there is also an Alexander Kelley who married a Mary Holmes Davis and had other children: (Giles M, Sophronia) besides the two that are listed from Jerusha.

Any information you have would be greatly appreciated since I am still working on this line and believe that they may have gotten into Mormonism because on the LDS thread there is also a William Kelley (brother or nephew) that married a Lydia Frazier/Frasur and brought her back to VT and she lived next door. The elder wife was 67 at the time - so it is quite obvious that the three youngest children in the 1850 census were not hers. It was listed in that census that a Lydia was living next door! So...it may be that they had several wives??? Just a curiousity.

I also have John and Louisa in my family tree. According to the J. Lufkin Douglas genealogy (now available in Google books), they had 5 children, including Betsey. The 1860 census record shows 2 children at that date, neither of which matches the other 5. I couldn't find the family in the 1870 or 1880 census. In 1900, John and Louisa are in California.

John Braley Douglas was the brother of my great-great-grandmother, Emily Douglas.

Mike Cushing
Re: Louisa R. Greenslitt

I know this is old information, but I'd be interested in sharing any information on the Douglas family you might have.

Benjamin Greenslet/Greenslit

I am still searching for parentage of Benjamin Greenslit who married Pathina Davis in 1813. Benjamin was born about 1792 in Vermont and died before 1870. He married a second time to Sally Hayden and may have had a son Horace, with her.

With Pathina, Benjamin had Ammos, Henry, Charles, Mariette, Norman, Elihu, Margaret, and Truman.

Benjamin lived in both Vermont and Massachusetts.

Any information on parentage of Benjamin OR additional information on Sally Hayden Greenslet and son Horace would be appreciated.
