Donna, Daniel Greathouse did not have any other children besides Gabriel, as Louise Johnson responded to you several years ago. Have you found any other possibilities for John 1774's father?
Also, Herman Groethausen (b. 1670) left Germany in 1709 and arrived in Pennsylvania (not Virginia) in 1710.
Vivian

Hi Cindy, I believe I'm your half sister. Is your Mother RoseMary? If yes, you have 2 half sisters, myself and Linda. We both live in California. I have our Father's entire family history back to the 1600's. The Greathouse' migrated from Germany to Virginia/West Virginia in the 1600's. I will scan the documents on Monday and upload them as an attachment. Our Father was an only child.

David Donsel Greathouse who died in 1986 in Reno, Nevada also is my father. Do you have any family tree information for me? I know nothing about his parents, especially his mother's side of the family. He died when I was a teenager so I remember very little of what he told me about his family. Did he have any siblings?

Greathouse Kids - Texas

I am searching for 3 Greathouse children. Polly/Dolly A. born abt 1853, William H. born abt. 1855, and Samuel H born abt 1858. The children were all born either in Tyler County or Hill County Texas. They are listed in the 1860 census with their mother Julia Ann Snead Greathouse. Julia married Abel Greathouse Jan 8, 1852 in Tyler County, Texas. In 1870, Samuel (age 10) is listed in the household with Malone and Susan Reynolds in Hill County, Texas. Cannot find nothing on Polly/Dolly or William in 1870. In 1880, William (age 23) is listed with his Aunt Mary Owens in Palo Pinto, Texas. Nothing on the other two. I do not know what happened to Abel or to Julia. I have not found Abel Greathouse on any census'. He is mentioned in the Tyler County Texas minutes as helping build roads for the county. If anyone has any information or leads, please contact me. It will be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanking you in advance
Kathy

No, I don't know anything about this Myers. After researching more on Sarah Jane, I think that this could even be a different Sarah Jane by her birth year. I have read somewhere that Sarah Jane's husband (myers) was injured or killed on his way home from Springfield, MO. This would probably fit the picture better as they all lived around Marshfield in the Webster & Wright Counties area. I would expect to locate something more on him right now than what I have been able to find on her. So many Sarahs out there. I have been researching the cemeteries too.

This is my grandparents William Hays Greathouse and Alice Menetta Stewart. William Hays is the son of William Michael Greathouse and Sarah Jane Johnson. As far as whether his name was William or not- his obituary reads - W.M.Greathouse as does Sarah Jane's Obituary in reference to him. He went by Michael mostly.
William Michael died in Cedar Junction, KS in Feb. 1906, from pneumonia following injuries he suffered while unloading barrels of molassas, and one of the barrels rolled over him. He is buried in Johnson Co, KS. Sarah Jane later married his brother Abraham (Abe) and helped raise his children. Sarah Jane died in St. Clair Co., MO in 1938, and is buried in the Union Cemetery, Monticello Twp, Shawnee Mission, Kansas. It took me some time to locate her grave as there was some doubt that she was put in the right cemetery to start with. Michaels grave could not be found at that time. I have not located it yet. I believe the descrepency is in the name of Monticello. There is a Twp. of Monticello, a cemetery called Monticello and another at Desoto,KS referred too as Monticello. My Mother was a child at the time and attended the funeral and remembers how upset everyone was that his grave could not be found. I really believe they are not in the same cemetery at all.
If anyone has information to share I would appreciate the help. This has been like putting a puzzle together.

Other than the marriage record and census records for Julia, the only other thing I found for Abel was a February 1852 Tyler County Court record (minutes) where a road was ordered from Town Bluff to Sturrocks's Ferry and 2 of the 'hands' that were reqired to work on the road were Israel Sneed (Julia's father?) and Abel Greathouse.

Correction on the last paragraph which reads:
"Michael Greathouse “may” have been the son of John Greathouse born 13 Feb 1756 and who died in 1838 in Harrison County, Virginia. Because John had a will and Michael is not named in the will, we cannot use the will to establish relationship. At this time, there are suggestions that he might be a son, but it has not been proven."

It should have read:
"Michael Greathouse "may" have been the son of William and Maria Barbara Schuetz Greathouse. Because William had a will and Michael is not named in the will, we cannot use the will to establish relationship. At this time, there are suggestions that he might be a son, but it has not been proven."

Sorry about that mistake.

Moses married Nancy Curry, daughter of John Curry. Harrison County VA Date of Bond Moses Greathouse and John Curry and on 6th of August John Curry gave permission suggesting Nancy was not of age. Aug 7, 1819 license was issued, but marriage took place Nov 13, 1819. It is believed that Nancy’s mother was Eleanor Welsh Currey although this has not been documented. Descendant Ira Greathouse of Flemington, WV, Born 14 Sept 1872 Flemington WV says that Nancy was d/o John Curry. (Guy Tetrick Microfilm Reel #53).
Do you think you could find where you read that about the husband dying on the way back from Springfield? I had heard once(can't remember where I heard it)that her husband died on the way back from Illinois. But maybe I just thought it was Illinois. Seems like it was a Springfield and maybe I just assumed it was Illinois instead of Springfield, Missouri. I did not mention it earlier as it seemed to be only a story. But maybe it is true. I know that Sarah Jane Greathouse was on the 1850 Greene County, MO. census at about age 17 living with her father and siblings. Her father was Michael Greathouse. She had a brother Andrew Jackson Greathouse who my grandfather was name for.

There has to be someone somewhere who knows what we need to know.

Sherry

Look at the Harrison County Court records during 1795-1796. While doing family research on the same John Greathouse you referenced earlier, I remember reading a small citation where the same John Greathouse living in Elk Creek, Peel Tree Township of Harrison County, Virginia gained custody of a Michael in 1795, who is identified in the court records as being an orphan 4 years of age (he had to be born in 1791).

I hope this helps.

Robert Greathouse
Yes, Israel is Julia's father. Thank you so much for finding that. I do not know if there is any information on the marriage certificate, but would like to see what is on it or if it is just recorded.

You have been a big help. We know at least Israel was still alive in 1852.

Thanks again for your help. I really do appreciate it
Kathy

I am searching for any information on Dolly (Polly or Mary) A. Greathouse, born abt 1853, William H Greathouse, born abt 1855 and Samuel H Greathouse, born abt 1858. Their parents were Abel Greathouse and Julia Snead Greathouse. I have the marriage date of Jan 8, 1852 in Tyler county, TX, for Abel and Julia. Julia and the three children were listed in the household of Sarah Snead in 1860. In 1870, I found Samuel living with Reynold relatives.

Please contact me with any information or questions.

Thanking you in advance
Kathy Snead

I was glad to see your post and hope you may still be active. I have recently renewed my work in family history research and was looking for James & Ella Webb just yesterday. They would be my mother's great-grandparents. If you would like, I will send you what I have on that line. I would be very appreciative for anything you have on Ella's ancestry.

Brenda

Hello Betty,

I'm so glad to hear back from you! I did not have Ella's parents' names, but the my Ella did marry James W. Webb on 30 Dec 1878 in Ritchie Co., WV, and I have his parents as Sylvester D. Webb and Elizabeth A. Nutter Webb. So it sounds like our Ella's are the same! So if you have anything additional on her, I'd greatly appreciate having it.

I'm just starting to get all my scattered notes entered into an organized program. I believe that I have more further back on the Webb line if that is of any interest to you. Also, if you want what I have on Ella's descendants.

Thank you and have a great day.

Brenda
