I have a mystery too which may or may not connect. My grandmother told me her mother Mary Cecelia Grealy b. Dublin 1880 was given the choice of two trips when she graduated from school in 1899. She could visit either her Australian or her American cousins. She chose America but I have wondered what the Australian connection may have been.

Her parents were John Joseph Grealy b. about 1853 in Galway, possibly Athenry, and Mary Hughes b. about 1847, location unknown.

My Honorah (Nora) Agnes Grealy (1858-1912) emigrated to Australia in 1880. Her brother Peter and wife Celia Cohen emigrated to Australia a couple of years later. Nora Grealy married Bryan Connor later in 1880. Nora and Bryan Connor were my 2nd great grandparents and I am descendant of their son James Bernard O'Connor and Lilly Tyrrell through their daughter Catherine O'Connor. From her marriage and death certificate I read Nora was born in Oranmore, Galway to Mark Grealy and Kate Higgins. I have not progessed any further.

This may be the connection?

Well this just gets more interesting. John Joseph Grealy's eldest son was named Mark, and of course I know that there were strong naming traditions so that first names kept repeating in a given family. Perhaps my John Joseph and your Mark were brothers. The timing would be about right. The only info I have about John J. Grealy's birthplace comes from census data showing he was from county Galway. My great-grandmother's place of residence just before immigration was Athenry near the city of Galway, even though at that time her father was resident in Dublin. I believe Oranmore is also near the town of Galway. It's been a while since I tried to use the Irish genealogy websites and I know more info has been added. I may try again and see if I can pop a John Joseph with Peter and Mark as brothers in the same Grealy family. Thanks, Sue
