Rachel Greacen of Co Monaghan, Ireland
Allegedly born in 1824, the only thing I know about her is that she married Robert Black of Dungannon in 1847 and immigrated with her husband and 7 children to New Zealand via Queensland in 1863-5.
From the names of her children, her father might be called William?
Any help would be gratefully received. Sarah

Re: Rachel Greacen of Co Monaghan, Ireland
Thank you so much! I have wondered about her for a very long time!
Do you know anything further on the Greacen's of Co Monaghan?

Re: Rachel Greacen of Co Monaghan, Ireland
I know only that Nathaniel Greacen was a printer. I have only begun to look at that family, so my knowledge is slight. The printer published as early as 1809. Whether the Nathaniel Greacen, son of Nathaniel Greacen, who married in 1849 was really the son or grandson of the printer is still uncertain. A James Greacen, eldest son of Nathaniel Greacen of Monaghan Town, died in 1845 in Armagh. I expect he was a son of the printer.

Re: Rachel Greacen of Co Monaghan, Ireland
In the library I found the following (an interesting spelling variation included!):
Old Irish Graveyards - County Monaghan - Part III Eileen Hewson pg 21 - Glaslough - St Salvator's Church of Ireland (on Castle Leslie Estate)
GREASON, HOLLAND & WILSON Underneath lieth the reamins of JOHN GREASON late of Clanickney, who departed this life 4th Nov 1786, aged 84 years. Also the remains of his wife ELIZABETH GREASON who departed this life 21st Feb 1809 aged 91 years. Also their two daughters ELIZABETH & ELENOR. Also ROBERT GREASON son to the above John [and] Elizabeth who died 7th Dec 1812, aged 67 years. Also ELIZABETH GREASON wife to Nathl Greason who died 19th April 1812, aged 79 years. Also JOHN GREASON, son to the above John and Elizabeth who died 9th Feb 1821 aged 66 years. Also the reamins of the above named NATHANIEL GREASON who died the 5th day of Dec 1823, aged 71 years. Also MARY HOLLAND daughter to the above named John & Elizabeth who died 7th Jan 1829, aged 82 years. Also MARY WILSON wife to George Wilson of Mullabene who died 31st Dec 1851, aged 80 years.
I think the Nathaniel could be our one (or his father). But having looked at the dates of him and his wife, either the transcription was wrong or he like significantly older women! If he was 91 and not 71 he would be about the same age as her, but too old to be John & Elizabeth's son.
Funny how finding answers produces more questions!

Re: Rachel Greacen of Co Monaghan, Ireland
Isn't that just the truth! I started looking at Nathaniel Greacen because one of his daughters married a Swan, and was the mother of William Swan of Monaghan, proprietor of the Northern Standard newspaper. I don't suppose there are any Swans listed in the book? Feel free to contact me directly. And thanks for filling in some more pieces of the puzzle!

Re: Rachel Greacen of Co Monaghan, Ireland
Rachel would have been the daughter of Nathanial b 1777, who was the son of Nathanial b 1755, the son of James b 1730 and Jane nee Bell. James was apparently the son of George Grierson b 1694. Nathanial 1755 was the printer and took part in the rebellion of the United Irishmen in 1798. My gggrandfather John Greacen was born into this family in Monaghan about 1818. If anyone can tell me how exactly he is connected to them I would be very grateful.

Re: Rachel Greacen of Co Monaghan, Ireland
Mark - I also haven't made a connection to the Nathaniel group but wonder if we have any connection. My great grandmother was Mary Jane Greacen born about 1855 and married to Thomas Harper. She was from Grigg, Co. Monaghan which was mostly Greacens. Her father was William Greacen, whose wife was a Mitchell, and her grandfather was John Greacen. Mary Jane had about 10 siblings, including a sister Letitia who went to New Zealand, and a brothr Wilson Greacen who I think went to Toronto. Does any of this ring a bell? I have a vast collection on Greacens everywhere and need help connecting all of them. David Harper

Re: Rachel Greacen of Co Monaghan, Ireland
Hi. I nearly fell off my chair when I read your post. For about 2 years I have been searching for the next generation for my family tree that at this GRECIAN (GREACEN) branch now brings me to 25 generations. James Greacen and Jane Bell are my grandparents 24 times removed. My father is Virgil Grecian of Marion and Twilia Grecian. Do you have any info on George Grierson and beyond?? Are we related? How amazing this is. Thanks.

Re: Rachel Greacen of Co Monaghan, Ireland
The data on them is in the 1821 Census Abstracts, Rachel is there, aged 3, dau of Nathaniel who was son of Nathaniel.
You need to look for variations in the spelling as it is sometimes Greason, other times Greacen and Greachen. They lived in Aviemore House, Mill Street, Monaghan Town.
If you Google "The spiritual Rose" you will see that he needed to use a Nom de Plume to print various articles. One of them did marry a Swan which is where I connect so you'd need to look at the other marriages for patterns as there are very often cross connections between the other families. Very much a "closed shop" scenario!
If I remember correctly, when the Newspaper owned by Swans was sold it went to a Greachen (nephew) who was in London...(3 generations later), so as you can see the apple didn't drop far from the tree!
You have to look at who else the Greachens married over the years, for example other Swan(n)s.
