I am getting back to my family history research after a long absence. I would like to continue assembling a family tree for GRANT.

If anyone would like to exchange GRANT information with me they would be very welcome. Information regarding any family trees bearing this surname would be very helpful to my research as I hope to eventually find connecting ancestors to all individuals bearing this same name worldwide. I would be more than willing to send what information I have by Gedcom, or any other agreed method, to any interested parties. I run Legacy 6 as a family history programme on my computer.

You have certainly taken on an ambitious project. I have ancestors both, in the Grant Family and in the Armstrong Family. I would be happy to share information with you. My line of Grants descend from Thomas Grant (Graunt) That came to Boston in 1652 aboard the John and Sarah.

My great great grandfather is William Grant born about 1811/1812 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He married Catherine Haley about 1843, supposedly at West Point, N.Y. Because he was in the military, each of his five children were born in different places.

Would you have William Grant and Catherine Haley Grant in your data base? I can't seem to get past William or his wife Catherine. William immigrated to the U.S. about 1837; joined the military in January 1838 at Lowell, Massachusetts. Supposedly he had been in the service in Scotland, also. I have all military papers from the US government (well, all they had, I guess) from when he was in the Civil War and none of the papers had his exact birth date!--just age and place of birth at the time he enlisted.

Would appreciate it if you could see if he and Catherine were in your data base.

PS - His children, in case you might have them are: (1) William, Jr., born 19 aug 1844, Houlton Barrachks, Maine; (2) John Rodney, born 6 Nov 1849, Fort Snelling, Minnesota; (3) Mary Emma, born 19 Sep 1852, Indiana; (4) James William, 2 Sep 1854, Jefferson Barracks, Missouri; and (5) Joseph Grant, born 15 Aug 1858, Fort Ripley, Minnesota. Joseph is my great grandfather.

Hi Mary! Good to hear from you. I'm sorry but the Grants' you wrote about do not appear in my Family Tree Maker Data Base. My branch of the Grant Clan came to this country from England in 1630 in the person of Matthew Grant. The only way we could be related is if somewhere way back before Matthew there was a common ancestor. Good luck in your search. Clues come from places you never expect. Keep looking!

I have recently found that I have a Grant line of ancestry. My gggrandmother was Hannah Grant, b. Skowhegan, ME in 1809 to Benjamin and Abigail (Marsh) Grant. Benjamin was supposedly b. in Lyme, Grafton Co., NH in 1766, died Skowhegan, ME in March 1846. He is found in Cornville, Somerset Co., ME 1810-1830 census. In 1840 I beleive he and Abigail were living with their son, Nathaniel Grant, in Somerset Co., ME. Hannah married John Foss, son of Rev. Joseph and "Betsey" (Tufts) Foss, on 6 Dec 1840 in Cornville, ME. She and John are buried in Athens, ME. I have been unable to find anything on Benjamin further back than the 1810 census. It is possible he was living with the Reuben Grant family in Lyme, NH at the time of the 1790 census, but so far I haven't found him on the 1800 census in either NH or ME. Do you know anything about this Benjamin Grant or his family? Any clues would be appreciated.
