Hi - I am looking for any information on Hugh Grainger who was born in 1814 Newbattle, Midlothian. His father was John Grainger and mother Lilias (Thomson) Grainger. I believe that he arrived in Melbourne on the Ocean Chief in October 1856 (giving his age as 40). Family information tells me that he was a 'remittance man' and went to the Darling River area, and from his father's will I know that he was left the sum of £30 from a Trust Fund, yearly during his lifetime. I have not seen the list of passengers from the Ocean Chief's journey, however, I know that a Hugh Grainger was an unassisted passenger and that there were 26 Scots on board. If anyone has access to the passenger list could they confirm that Hugh Grainger indeed came from Scotland, and if this is the case I can be sure that this was indeed 'my Hugh Grainger'. It would be very interesting to know what he did upon arrival in Victoria or indeed if he married. There is a record of the death of a Hugh Grainger in Victoria in 1879 but I have no way of knowing if this is the same man.
Any help anyone can give me would be much appreciated.
Best wishes to all the Graingers ! Lynne
