I got stuck looking for one of my great-great-grandfathers, William Henry Graham.
Spelling is different on several documents. Here's what I got:
- born in 1817 or 1819 in Brighton, Sussex (UK) according to the census
- he is tracable in the UK census of 1861 and 1871, *not* in 1841 or 1851...
- the census mentions him as a carpenter, his marriage certificate says "cabinet maker"
- married to Catherine Copley in Claypole, Lincolnshire (Newark registration district) in 1852
- the marriage certificate mentions his name as "Grayham", living in Hastings (Sussex), while the census say "Graham", living in London
- his sons were all Grahams; only the obituary of his youngest son Alfred says Grayham (but not the other documents related to him)
- father George Grayham deceased and machinist
I can't find any trace of his birth - at least not in Brighton. No George ever had a William or William Henry for a son at that time and place.
Him living in Hastings and marrying a girl from Claypole, about 300km up north, seems strange too, but it's what the marriage certificate says...
If anyone happens to have some more info, I'd be very grateful...
