My great-grandfather was Reinhold Julius Grabau from Heidchen, Prussia. He came over to NJ on the Steamship 'Hermann' from Bremen to NY Harbor on May 15, 1885.My grandmother's father was Johann Ferdinan Nyman. Anything correlate?

I don't know if there is a connection. The information I have states that Johann Christain Lebrecht Grabau was born 1 July 1810, in Leipzig, Germany. His son, Johann Frederick married Charolette Kuhlo from Prussia. I believe Johann Frederick migrated to the US as his son John Gottlieb was born in Tower Hill, IL. I have no idea how they got to the US or when they crossed. I will keep your note for reference incase I learn anything more.

Also researching Johann Christian Lebrecht Grabau (Sr), who was the father of your ancestor JCL Grabau who married Wilkens as well as of my ancestor, William Friedrich Grabau who was born 1824 and married Adeline Augusta Walker in Baltimore but resided in Williamsburg and Richmond and Nashville and Ashville.
JCJ Sr was a well=known organist, teacher of music and drawing, and was born in Kothen. No more info yet but I wonder if he was named for renown organist Johann Christian Lebrecht Kittel, Bach's last student.

Correction: William Friedrich Grabau b 1824 was NOT the son of Johann Christian Lebrecht Grabau, bu of his younger brother, Johann Andreas Grabau.

Nicoline Grabau, a daughter of JCL(Sr), was my great-grandmother. She married Louis von Ragué in Bremen in 1869 and returned with him to Wisconsin, where he had a remarkable career as an Evangelical Protestant Missionary, who founded over 20 churches in the US. I bought a photocopy of Louis's autobiography (in German) via Amazon.
