John George Grab and wife, Helen Kissel Barth lived in Rochester NY in 1870. He was born in Baden-Baden in 1842. His father was said to be George Grab who married Margaret?. No other info. Son, Alfred John 1885-1953 of John George, died in my area, Hudson, NY. His son, Theodore Herbert 1922- is the grandfather of my children. My ex-husband is Theodore Edward 1943-. We believe that the first Grab came in at New York City. This information is a from a relative, Uncle Adam Herbert Grab 1887- ca. 1970, son of John George. He lived a long
time. Trying to link some of this family together. Any info?

My great grandfather, Joseph Grab, came to Dubuque, Iowa, in 1861. Family legend has it that he came over from Germany on a "tramp steamer." I have no records of his parents or siblings. Anyone have information that might help?

Elizabeth,
Do you have any knowledge whether John George Grab came to this country with any siblings? Or how he came? Family lore here says that Joseph A. Grab came from southern Germany (Bavaria?) but he came over on a cattle boat rather than a passenger ship. Any similar stories in your line?

I am the Great Great Grandson of Joseph Grab who came to Rochester in 1845, from Bavaria. There were actually 3 different Grab families in the Monroe County area at that time. My family was catholic. One of the others was Luthern, and the 3rd I am not sure. I do have information on all three.

The family I am researching (John) George Grab(b). b. 3/16/1842 in Baden Baden, Germany, married in Rochester to Helen Kissel Barth in 1870. He died and was buried in Mt. Hope 4/17/1916. Now there is an older George Grab, who supposedly died and was buried in Mt. Hope in 1892. Ht was 47 years and born in Germany. His wife's name was Margaret ?? It is interesting that 3 Grab families came to this area at the same time. I have been to Mt. Hope in search of the Grabs, didn't find much as the woman there to help you was rather caustic and unpleasant. It was a great cemetery though.

Any help you have would be great. I don't know if I have anything to return the favor though.

I am doing the Grab's for my daughters as this is my married name. I do know that John George b. 1842-1916 had 11 children:
Elizabeh Helen b. 187?, Bertha Helen, b. 1872,Lydia Christine, b. 1873, Emelia Sophie, b. 1878, Ida Eugene, b. 1879, John George, Jr. b 1880, Leonard William, b. 1883, Alfred John (my line) 1885, Adam Herbert b. 1887, Gertrude b. 1889 and Austine Frederic, b. 1891. Whew!
