You are quite right, it should be Fredericktown.

Today was the first notice that I remember receiving about this particular Goza thread.
Quickly scanning through the thread, I'd just like to verify my first impressions:
1. Posters so far have been African American -- descendents of slaves. However, one post mentioned being slave owners.
2. I didn't see any mention of Alabama.
If these two impressions are true, I wouldn't have any connection to this thread except perhaps via a vague memory of Civil War history. And that is that the slaves took on the surname of their former masters when they were emancipated after the war. And that brings another question: Would the newly free men and women have known the given names of their former owners and their wives and children?
3. One poster mentioned "largest land owner". Is there a threshhold that must be crossed to differentiate between large, medium and small?
My interest in posting on this thread is that my grandmother was a Goza and the earliest back I've traced is to her grandfather. He was born in South Carolina and married in Calhoun County, Alabama. His children were born: first son - SC; son, two daughters - Georgia; son, three daughters - Alabama.
Sincerely and best wishes, Glenn

Since my last post, I have received two email attachments sent by a distant cousin via TransferBigFiles DOT COM**. I am still working on cleaning up place names, which are “all over the place”. For example: Ottawa, Kansas and Ottawa, Franklin County, Kansas. Using these two as the sample, other places could be Ottawa, KS, U.S.A; Ottawa, Franklin Co., Kans; etc. So it’s been quite a chore. That original PAF file has some 74,000+ persons in it, going back to Matthew Gossee Sr, born about 1700 in Virginia. Also in this thread I noticed mention of Aaron Goza, which is in my “place name cleanup” project; along with Copiah County, MS and Arkansas. I also noted several posts mentioned Joe Goza’s book. That was a second notice I received from TransferBigfiles. The file itself is Joe’s book converted to images, page by page. The introduction mentions Gossees in Italy. If I ever get the place names cleaned up, that will be my next project – actually looking at the images and using them as source citations in my database. So my next question regarding this thread: Is everybody referring to descendents of slaves or descendents of their former owners? If the latter, I would be glad to try to get copies to you via TransfBgFiles. (My receipt of these two files was my first awareness of such a service, so I would be trying something new as a sender.)
**TransferBigFiles sends you a notice that you have a big file waiting; and in that email the give you a hyperlink, which you can copy and paste into your web browser (my preferred method), or click on directly. There is a time limit.
Good luck everyone, Glenn

My grgrandmother was the oldest daug, Elizabeth, born 8 Jan 1854 in Copiah, MS to James Webster & Palina Walker Goza. They were married 11 Oct 1853 in Copiah, MS. All their children were born there. A U.S Mortality Schedule has Jas W. Goya dying Mar 1870 in Madison, TX. The 1870 census for Madisonville, Madison Co, TX lists Palina and her 8 children. In 1880 the family is residing in Robertson Co, TX(Guya-Mulatto-trascription error). Elizabeth Goza Mason is divorced and the 3 youngest children, J.D, Flor??? & JR are hers. Elizabeth "Bettie" will marry W.L. Easter, in Hill Co, TX, on 20 Sep 1882. They will have 4 children with this union. Betty Lou
