Services For Widow Of Minister To Be Conducted Today

Services for Mrs. Kittie V. Gowdy, widow of Rev. W. F. Gowdy, who died at her home, 2115 Auburn Avenue, Monday, will be conducted at the W. Mack Johnson funeral home at 10 o’clock this morning.
Mrs. Gowdy is survived by a son, R. C. Gowdy, 2115 Auburn Avenue, and a sister, Mrs. J. .F.. Simon, Hagerstown, Md.
Rev. W. F. Gowdy, who died about eight years ago, was prominent in Presbyterian work for more than 40 years. He was pastor of the Pleasant Ridge Church and later pastor of the Fourth Presbyterian Church.
Burial will be in Spring Grove.

Dr. R. C. Gowdy, Prominent Physicist, Dies; Dean Emeritus Of UC College Of Engineering

Dr. Robert Clyde Gowdy, widely known Cincinnati physicist and Dean Emeritus of the College of Engineering, University of Cincinnati, where he was a member of the faculty for 38 years, died yesterday at UC’s Christian R. Holmes Memorial Hospital. He was 64 years old. His home was at 2111 Auburn Ave.
Born in Springfield, Ohio, March 10, 1886, the son of the Rev. William F. Gowdy and Mrs. Rhoda E. Vose Gowdy, Dr. Gowdy received his higher education at UC, where he was graduated in the class of 1906 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He received his M. A. degree there in 1907 and his Ph. D. degree in 1909. He continued his studies at Trinity College, Cambridge, England, in 1909 and 1910 and at the College de France, Paris, 1910 and 1911.
Beginning his teaching career as instructor in physics at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa., in 1911, Dr. Gowdy came to UC the following year, also as an instructor in physics, and continued there in various capacities until his retirement August 31, 1946, because of poor health.
After filling post of assistant professor and then professor of physics from 1916 to 1924, he was named Acting Dean of the Graduate School and later served as Assistant Dean and also Acting Dean of the College of Engineering and Commerce, Acting Director of the School of Applied Arts and Acting Director of the UC Institute of Scientific Research.
In 1940, he became Dean of the College of Engineering and Commerce, a position which, at that time, also carried with it the post of Director of the College of Applied Arts. Upon his retirement from these two capacities in 1946, Dr. Gowdy was given the honorary title of Dean Emeritus. A year later the University conferred upon him its honorary Doctor of Science degree.
In 1918 Dr. Gowdy left his association with UC for a time to serve as a Captain in Chemical Warfare in World War I.
A Presbyterian and a Republican, Dr. Gowdy was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Delta Tau Delta, Tau Beta Pi, Omicron Delta Kappa, Sigma Xi, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Ohio Academy of Science, American Physical Society, Society Francaise de Physique, Beta Gamma Sigma, Sigma Sigma, Scabbard and Blade and American Association of Physics Teachers and the Engineering Society of Cincinnati.
Dr. Gowdy was a Past President of the Literary Club of Cincinnati and a former chairman of the Ohio Section, Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education.
Besides his widow, Mrs. Mabel Greely Gowdy, whom he married December 18, 1914, Dr. Gowdy leaves a son, William Robert Gowdy, 219 Charles St., Wyoming and two grandchildren.
Services for Dr. Gowdy are to be conducted at 2 p. m. tomorrow at the W. Mack Johnson funeral home, with the Rev. Henry Rogers, Pastor of the Mt. Auburn Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove.
