please help if anyone can give me some information on my great grand father my whole family would be very greatful.
Given Name: James Gowdy
Brith Place: Hoisington KS
Born: Friday Feb.13 1903
He was given to Howells in Paxtonville PA to raise because his birth parents didn't have enough money to raise him when they came east for some reason. They later tried to get him back from the Howell's but didn't have enough money to pay for all of the cloths they had bought him. So he had to stay with the Howell's and his birth parents went back out west some where. He later took on the Howell name but continued to use Gowdy as his middle name. I have a picture of his birth mother but no first name to go by. Would really love to reasearch my back round but need help. If anyone has heard of this story and might know somtething please contact me at my e-mail address. Would love to know the rest of my family.

Christine, has anyone given you any help with your Gowdy - Howell search? That is a very interesting story and I would like to know whether you've had any success since posting your message to the board.

Christine,
I know this is a long shot, but my great-grandma's name was Gowdy and she lived in Hoisington at about that time. My grandma was born in 1907 I think, and for years she thought she was an only child. In her teens she found out she had a brother and sister that had been put up for adoption. My greatgrandma had left her husband becasue of a drinking problem. We know the brother and sister, but it is possible there were more. Also, my great-grandma's family came from Pennsylvania. Anyway, it just seemed so coincidental I had to respond. The Dad's name was Ed Gowdy. He also had a brother named Chan.

Christine,
I forgot to add, I have pictures of my great-grandma so I would recognize yours if it was the same.

Christine - I have never heard this story but I am related to Howells from Hoisington. He would have been a toddler at the time my grandmother was marrying so I can't figure how they could have been connected.
