Can someone clear this Gowdy Line up?

Can someone clear this Gowdy Line up?

I am SO confused. There are too many Johns and Roberts and Ann's and Nancys in this family. I can't figure it out. Everytime I try I get more confused.

I see there was a William Gowdy m Isabella Fleming.

Is this William a brother to John Gowdy who also migrated up to Ohio? This John married 3 times. Ann Hatfield, Amelia Scott and Nancy Murphy.

When it comes to John and his many wives I can't keep track of these kids. One of them is my ancestor.

I've read many posts on this line on this board and I'm still confused.

HELP!!!!
:)

I am a descendant of William Gowdy and Isabella Fleming. I did a considerable amount of research a few years ago sorting out their descendants, many of whom moved on to Illinois from Ohio. They had come to the Clark/Greene Co area from what was then York Co, now Adams Co, Pennsylvania, via Kentucky. See my web page at http://www.nas.com/~merrilygl/. I hope any of you researching the Ohio Gowdies will take my information and research it further. I welcome any updates, changes, etc. You will also find a link to another descendant's web page. There appeared to be a second family of Gowdy's in Greene Co - possibly cousins to my line. But I was unable to sort through all of them. Your John may well have been a brother to my William.

Hi Wendy,
I don't recognize those three wives among the many John Gowdy descendants of the John Gowdy-Abigail Ryan marriage who were also in Greene Co., Ohio. Perhaps you can give us some dates and why you think your John was in Greene Co. I know we would all like to help you.

Hi again Wendy,
I found my data on your John who married Nancy Murphy among others.

I have always believed that your John was the son of John (died 1807) and Ann Gowdy (d. 1816).

I cannot say that I have proof of this statement. It just seems that this is the only place among the several Gowdy lines in this part of Ohio in which your John fits.

I have John Gowdy b abt 1766 died 1843. I have 3 wives listed. Ann Hatfield, Amelia Scott and Nancy Murphy. I have seen listed 19 children but only have 18 names. Rebecca was one of them and she married Amos Wolf. I have seen the Wolf's listed in Greene Co not far from a John Gowdy.

I am confused on what children belong to what wife. Now that I've seen many John's and Robert Scott Gowdy's, I don't know who is who.

I can't help you. All I know is that he left a will in which he named his wife Nancy and 9 children. He and Nancy Murphy married in Clark Co. 24 Nov. 1818. I have never found an earlier marriage to account for the kids born before 1818.

The Clark County history says William and John Goudy arrived there in 1808. Of course, Clark was formed from Greene Co. in 1818, the county in which John and Ann died.

I haven't read Clark Co. deeds for the Goudys; have you? It might help. There are records in Montgomery Co., OH which connect with William Gowdy who married Isabella Fleming and lived in Clark Co. OH. Isabella had connections to the Lowrys of Butler and Hamilton counties.

Yes, it IS very confusing.

I think I have one thing wrong. I think it was Clark Co and not Greene Co. It was Greene Township.

I have a small biography that mentioned John and his wife came from Kentucky with their two children. That's all it says. This is the only evidence I have of John having at least two wives. It also says that he had about 19 children. I will have to look it up in my notes. I have so much I cannot think of exactly where it could be.

I guess I'm not the only one sorting this madness out!

Hi I don't think I can clear it up but can add to the confusion. My ancestor Andrew Gowdy was from Greene co. OH then ended up in Trumbull/Ashtabula co's OH. His son Joseph had to go to Greene co about property when Andrew died. I think Andrew's father was Rob't. There is also some connection to Huntingdon, Pa so it looks to me like they went from Pa to Ky then to OH. In 1849 my Joseph was in Ca gold rush then his son Ceylon b. 1845 after civil war was in Ks then returned to OH. Andrew md Caty McMullen from Pa but her bro John md Eleanor Campbell in OH but John b Va per census. Joseph went to CA with bro-in-law Jackson Andrews/Andrus but did return after civil war. I also found the Andrus migrated from MA and were in Russellville outside of Albany Ny for awhile.
