Gowdy's - Clark County, Ohio
Does anyone have information on the John Goudey Jr. that is enumerated on the 1820 US Census for Clark County, Green Township. He is shown on the same page as William Goudey. He is also shown on the 1830 US Census for Clark County, Green Township as John Gowdy Jr. There is a John Gowdy marrying a Nancy Murphy on 24 November 1818 in Clark County. Is this the same John Goudey on the 1820 Census? Additionally, there are two Robert Gowdy's on the 1830 Census for Clark County: one in Bethel Township and one in Springfiled Township. I'm certain that the Robert Gowdy in Springfield Township is the son of William and Isabella Fleming Gowdy. Who is the other Robert Gowdy in Bethel Township and about 40-50 years of age? There is a James Gowdy marrying a Sarah Brown in Clark County on 11 Nov 1819. Is there any information on this man and his family? I believe I have found information on him and his family settling in Iowa. There is a James and Sarah Gowdy enumerated on the 1860 US Census for Iowa, Wapello County, Dahlonega Township. Given their ages and recorded birth state of Ohio, I'm speculating that this may be the same James and Sarah Gowdy. Any other James Gowdy listed for Clark County in the Gowdy Family history for Clark County is too young. Who is this man? Lastly, I'm seeking information on an Ambrose Gowdy of Clark County born approximately 1823. There is an Ambrose Gowdy enumerated on the 1850 US Census for Clark County. A lot of questions here. Any information would be appreciated. I do have a copy of the "History of the Gaudie, Gawdy, Gowdy Family". The family history of William Gowdy is well documented here. The family history of John Jr., the other Robert, James, and Ambrose is not. I would greatly appreciate any information on these four. You may e-mail me also at: mcdavitt@charter.net.

Re: Gowdy's - Clark County, Ohio
Hi Jim,
Re the two Robert Gowdys: I believe the older Robert was a son of John and Ann and therefore uncle to the other younger Robert on the 1830 census.
As for James Gowdy who married Sarah Brown, he didn't go anywhere. He lived and died in Greene County and had a son named John Brown Gowdy. He was a son of John Gowdy and Abigail Ryan.
I don't know who the James was in Wapello Co., Iowa, but since he states on the 1860 census that he was born in Virginia, I doubt any close connection with our particular Ohio Gowdys.

Re: Gowdy's - Clark County, Ohio
Jim, I didn't find a James and Sarah Gowdy in Wapello Co., Iowa, but I did find an Andrew and Rachel Gowdy there in 1860 - he was born Virginia and she was born in Ohio.
In 1850 this family was farming in Jackson Co., Ohio. I have never researched this location and have no knowledge of Andrew's folks.

Re: Gowdy's - Clark County, Ohio
1860 US Census, Iowa, Wapello County, Dahlonega Township:
Entry #536 is Andrew and Rachel Goudy. Entry #578 is Ezekiel and Dianah Goudy. Entry #579 is James and Sarah Goudy. Entry #580 is JB (Jacob) and Mary Ann Goudy.
The birth states are some what different on the 1870 census for the same township. The "Virginia" entries are elusive as the birth state for Jacob on the 1880 census now shows "West Virginia".
This is a family group that moved to Iowa from Ohio or possibly Indiana during the 1850's. There is a location north of Ottumwa, Iowa known as "Goudy Corner" where this family was predominately located. The migration path for this family appears to be Pennsylvania, Virginia (West Virginia), Ohio, Indiana, and Iowa.
- Ezekiel and family moved to Union, Iowa and he and his wife are buried there. - I lost Jacob and family, but, his son is buried in an unmarked grave at Dahlonega Cemetery along with my Great Grandmother Eliza Goudy. - James and Andrew's family settled near Agency, Iowa and are buried there.
I am told by family that this Goudy family is related to my Goudy/Gowdy family but no direct connection has been made. It appears that they were living in Ohio around 1830 - 1835 and may have moved west with my Goudy/Gowdy family. I suspect that James was an Uncle to my Great Great Grandfather William Gowdy.

How interesting! All I can say is that Ancestry's index didn't pull the others up! So much for ease and simplicity. Guess the old way still is the best - simply read the county line by line.

Hi Jim, I looked up the Goudy's in Wapello Co., Iowa on the 1860 census which the indexer totally missed (thank you for the entry number) and indeed, they were all living in Jackson Co., Ohio in 1850 - Milton Twp, District 80
#1144 James Gowdy, 54, PA, farmer Sarah, 50, VA Ezekil, 23, VA, farming Sarah J., 18, VA Jacob B., 13, VA
#1253 Andrew Goudy, 24, VA, farm

Sorry - apparently I clicked when I shouldn't ..... in Jackson Co. Ohio, #1253: Andrew Goudy, 24, Va, farmer Racheal, 23, Ohio James F., 2, Ohio

Re: Gowdy's - VA to Ohio to Iowa
You will find James Goudy in Brooke Co., VA in 1840, along with John Goudy. James and Sarah sold their land there in 1844 to John Witherspoon. Should date their removal to Jackson Co., Ohio. Sarah's maiden name was Mick.
James and Sarah had children: Mary Ann, Andrew, Ezekiel, Nancy Ann, Sarah Jane, Matilda, Jacob Brown, William James, John, Robert, and an adopted child named Martha Ann Tisdale.

Re: Gowdy's - Clark County, Ohio
Thanks for the above info. I stumbled across these Goudy's while researching the cemetery where my Great Grandmother is buried. JB's son is listed as: "GOUDY, JOSEPH born: 1859 died: April26, 1863 aged 4Years 5M 22 D Son of J.B. & M.A. Goudy" This is a small cemetery and we attempted to find the grave. Apparently the grave marker has sank into the ground or it's been removed for whatever reason. This entry put me on the journey of researching this line. I'm still trying to determine how my GGrandmother came to be buried at Dahlonega Cemetery. Our Goudy/Gowdy line seems to have banded with this Goudy line some time around 1895 - 1900. Again, it's said all Goudy's (regardless of how it's spelled) in Southeastern Iowa are related to one another. My GGrandmother's grave marker is still present at the cemetery and I do have a picture of that. I have also located other Goudy grave markers in Ottumwa Cemetery. The pictures have been posted on www.findagrave.com.

Re: Gowdy's - Clark County, Ohio
Oh yeh ... Brooke County is located in what is now West Virginia. An entry reflecting "Virginia" would have been correct pre-1863. Brooke County lies in the strip of West Virginia laying in between Pennsylvania and Ohio.
I have reasonable suspicions that my Goudy/Gowdy line originally came from Pennsylvania. This would follow with my previously mention migration path.
