Re: Goward Family in Leicestershire
Hi: I am a Goward currently in Leicestershire...I have a tree going back to William Goward 1810 in Little Melton Norfolk, where this branch stayed until the 1920's. I am happy to share.
We have a history that the family is Huguenot, and that an indigenous American woman came back on a return trip on the Mayflower, and married a Goward-does any one have any leads on this?

Re: Goward Family in Leicestershire
Richard, you said you were related to the Gowards of Market Harborough. I will be visiting MK for a few days in the summer with genealogy in mind. (see my previous message). Maybe I could connect with you?

Re: Goward Family in Leicestershire Audrey Maw (View posts) Posted: 13 Apr 2002 5:29PM Classification: Query Surnames: Goward I am also looking for Goward connections. My Gt.Gt.Grandfather, John Maw, c.1800 was married to Pricilla Goward on 23.1.1823 in Parish Church of Market Harborough. Her parents were Thomas Goward, b. about 1778, and Sarah. Maiden name not known. A Sarah Goward, aged 65, is listed in the 1841 census, living with a daughter, Sarah, aged 40yrs at Bowling Green Place in Market Harborough. Perhaps these bits of information might be of some help to you? Have you anything that would fill in my gaps, before 1778? Thanks. Mr. Pickering - this is a copy of what I originally posted back in 2002. Had a job finding it again.

Re: Goward Family in Leicestershire
Any help very gratefully received! I've tracked one branch of my Leicester ancestry to Ann Goward, born 1739 to Theophilus Withers Goward and Mary (maiden name unknown as yet), who were my 6 times great grandparents. I can't see this splendidly named chap anywhere else in Ancestry or the FamilySearch sites, and a google search returns nothing. You'd think a name like that would be easy to find. Has anyone please got any further information on him at all? Phil

Re: Goward Family in Leicestershire
Hi Phil, I am currently doing research into my Withers of Leicester. Checking on the Leicester Churches Baptism Disc, Theophilus Withers and Mary Goward had a daughter Ann who was baptised 8 Sep 1739 in St Nicholas Church, Leicester. At the same time it seems that Theophilus was married to Elizabeth, he had a son John with her, baptised in Feb 1739,and another son, William in 1741. Is it possible that Ann was illegitimate? The Withers go back another 5 generations in Leicester.

Re: Goward Family in Leicestershire
Hi Linda - seems likely then that Ann was illegitimate. Not the first in my chain of ancestors, I have to say!! Thanks for the reply.
