Re: Trace The Gowans Line
Hi Morwenna,
For some reason Ancestry didn't let me know you'd replied. The quote is from 1870, Blackie A biographical dictionary of eminent Scotsmen
Microform in English - New ed. / rev. throughout and continued by Thomas Thomson ; illustrated by numerous authentic portraits on steel. (1870) which is available to read online at openlibrary.org.
I've attached the 3 pages.....hope they're useable.
Best wishes,
Tom

Re: Trace The Gowans Line
Hi Tom
Many thanks for this - I could read the extracts very well and actually think I have seen them in another publication. I see what you mean about the bit about travelling bands of builders (which I hadn't really noticed before), but I would interpet that to be saying that these medieval builders were similar in spirit and had similar motivation to Kemp (not that he actually went around in a band himself - in fact it is obvious from his letters he was on his own in France). I am still intrigued by the Gowans connection - do you know of any documents relating to that you could point me to?
Best wishes Morwenna

Re: Trace The Gowans Line
Hi David - I am certain the Gowans were a Clan. My Branch came from West Calder and Edinburgh area. There are a few blacksmiths in the family tree. Sorry cannot help with any hard proof of it but it is a common Scottish name in that area. Edna Read
