I believe that the Archibald Gow you spoke of may be an ancestor of mine. My Grandfather and his family were from Glens Falls NY, and I know the most distant relative on our family tree went by that name.

Re: Alexander Gow of Saratoga Co., NY (1812-bef 1860)
Alexander Gow was not the son of Archibald Gow but of Cornelius (Neal Gow) who appears on the Clifton Park, Saratoga Co., NY, 1820, census. Cornelius married Sally Knowlton of that place around 1810, and both parents were probably dead by 1830. At any rate, they had at least Catherine (m Peck), Alexander, Sophia, Lucretia (m Irish), Christiana, John, and Jerusha. On the faint 1880 census, it looks as if Lucretia says her father was born in Scotland.

Thank you for the response. It sounds probable, but what is your source? I can provide you with the death date of Alexander. It is 12 Sep 1857 in Rexford Flatts, Clifton Park, Saratoga County. His inventory was made 29 Oct 1857.

Re: Alexander Gow of Saratoga Co., NY (1812-bef 1860)
Oh, great, thanks for the death date. OK, not to be coy, but what is your source for his being son of Archibald over in another county? 1) The will of John Knowlton (1747-1838) lists him as a grandchild. 2) THE HISTORY OF THE KNOWLTONS by Chas. Stocking says that Sally Knowlton married Cornelius Gow; Sally was a daughter of John Knowlton. (Stocking is just a secondary source, pub 1897) 3) All these people lived and stayed in and around Halfmoon/Clifton Park, Saratoga Co. (previously Albany Co.) from the 1770s onward. Alexander lived in Milton and Clifton Park and had six documented siblings in the area. 4) Many Knowlton men and husbands of the women in this area were blacksmiths, as was Alexander. This adds up to him being the probable son of Cornelius (whose daughter Lucretia Gow Irish said he was born in Scotland, but that may be wrong). I hope to have my rootsweb database updated in a week or so, and all the Gows will then appear. Do you know Alexander's wife's surname? Elizabeth

Re: Alexander Gow of Saratoga Co., NY (1812-1857)
Great you are still posting after 13 years, Pam. YES, of course it is of use and will soon be on my rootsweb worldconnect database. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=winspearebut includes only Cornelius Gow now. [how now brown Gow?] I had figured Daniel belonged to Alexander. He drowned with Samuel Cole, who may be the son of Sophia Gow Cole. Does the obit mention him? I found them on the 1850 mortality census. My email is knowltonew at earthlink.net
