I am also a Govea, My grandfather Andres Govea passed away in December of 2001. He was born in Santa Rita, a ranch in Saltillo, Coahuilla, Mexico in 1925. He married Socorro De La Rosa Echeverria, also from Santa Rita. I only recently met another Govea here in Houston, Texas. I would like to meet more Goveas and plan a family reunion at Hermann Park (Houston, TX) next year, October 2005.My family tree also has Neri-Jimenez & Vargas-Jave on my mother's side, and I married a Villenas-Molina.

Hey. I'm Ricardo Govea from Mexico. Sorry for my bad English. I've spent many years of my life tryin' to find out where do we come from, and certainly our surname comes from Portugal. There's no way out. There is in Portugal a city called "Gouveia", located in the sub region of Serra da Estrela, district of Guarda. Now, the first bearer of our surname was Fernao Nunes de Gouveia, son of Nuno Fernandes de Bobadela, who reigned the town Gouveia under the monarchy of Joao I.

There are many cases well recorded in history where many Gouveias and/or Goveas were processed by the Inquisition accused of "judaizers". It may be because Joao Fernandes de Gouveia married Filipa Nunes Homem, a "new christian" (better called "crypto-jewish", "marrano" or "judeoconverso") woman.

Nonetheless, Andre Gouveia, Francisco Gouveia, Antonio de Gouveia, Gerónima Govea, Pedro Govea and other individuals with our surname, in different periods and places, were persecuted and executed for they were signed as "marranos" or "judaizers". So it seems to me, considering that it's a toponimic surname, that Gouveia is the name adopted by secret jews that once converted to the Catholicism: I mean, Gouveia is a whole "New Christian" surname, adopted the first time for Fernao Nunes de Gouveia. I have to say that Nunes was a well considered crypto-jewish surname, as well as Homem, Castro and Mello. In fact, Portuguese ppl was double suspected of being "marranos" here in America in the past centuries, as long as Portuguese and Jewish were considered as synonimus.
