I'm interested in any info you have -- my husband's family is descended from this FG Govan. Thanks!

Hi.
Frederick Gregory Govan was born May 1870 in Rome, Georgia
Died Dec. 1917 in New Orleans, LA

Father: Moore Fauntleroy Govan Sr., born 1840, Richmond, VA
Died in Rome, Georgia
Mother: Martha "Mattie" Gregory, born 1843, North Carolina
died in New Orleans I think
Brother: M.F. Govan, Jr., born 1868, Alabama

Married Daisy Watson Thiel, 25 Nov 1903
Daisy was born 1877, New Orleans, LA (father from Germany)
She died 13 May 1957, in New Orleans

Children:
Charles Govan, b. 1907 in New Orleans
Elizabeth Govan Wallis, b. 1909, died 6 May, 1935 in NO
Jack Govan, b. 1913 in New Orleans

F.G.'s cousin, William Govan, is my ggrandfather. My mother told stories of F.G.'s father, Moore Fauntleroy Govan, who was a bit crazy and at one point lived in the hills in Alabama, where he "taught his horse to sing and eat oranges."!!!

M.F. Govan's is descended from plantation owning "first family" of VA--the Govans and the Fauntleroys.

Who is your relation to F.G.?

Sorry, I forgot to check back after a few days.

This info is very useful, thanks for sharing!

My husband is a great-grandson of Frederick Gregory. He and his family know a fair bit of their family history but I don't think they've taken much advantage of the Internet to connect the dots. :-)

Thanks -- that's really neat! I should have been more specific before, by the way -- they're descendants of Charles Govan, Daisy's son.

Just realized. Mattie Gregory was buried in Rome, GA, with her husband and son. Did I send you this link?

They are all there.

I am FGG's grandson. Thank you very much for the family information.

My father, Charles Thiel Govan, was born 15 Nov 1906.

FGG's widow lived with us for a number of years when I was a teenager in N.O. and she could no longer live alone with her disabled grandchild (Elizabeth's daughter). I remember Daisy saying she was born 100 years too early and 100 years too late, leading me to believe that she was born in 1876. When I dig out my xerox copies the pension papers of Charles A. Thiel, her father, I should be able to confirm whether she was accurate, speaking in generalities, or was in fact referring to 1876.

Charles was twice married; I am the only child of the second marriage, to Sue Mary Gordon of Alabama.

I have limited information on dad's two siblings, Elizabeth (whom I never knew personally) and Jack (John Fauntleroy) Govan.

Since encountering his name, I am interested in a possible cousin, Daniel Chevelette (sp?) Govan, BG CSA, buried in Holly Springs, MS. These Govans came out of SC to AK via AL/MS before the war. They may be related to James Govan of White Hall (the family place on the Mataponi River, which I have visited), King and Queen County, VA ca 1780s, one of two brothers (the other in Glasgow), who shipped goods to one another (we have two bills of lading, one in each direction). James was Moore F. Govan's grandfather, I believe.
