We could be related. My great grandfather Morris Govan was born in the Carolina's between Winston Salem, and Orangeburg. I don't have all my research in front of me now because I was just exploring this site.
However I would like to get back to you with further info and see if wee can connect. As the story is told to me the Govans grew up in a place called phyllis kitchen in the carolina's I'm trying to find out who great grand dads parents were the family migrated to Mass and then to Conn. thus, walking away and leaving everything,(ex. The first church Govan Baptist, a town called Govan and some Land.

Govans of Orangeburgh, SC
I am a direct descendant of Andrew Govan, born in Scotland, came to SC sometime after 1745. He settled in the Orangeburgh district. His son, Daniel Govan was in the House of Representatives, in Orangeburgh Dist around 1789. Daniel's son, Andrew Robison Govan b 1/13/1794 also served in the government, in the SC House of Representatives in 1820 and in the 18th 19th Congress, the 4th district from 12/4/1822 to 3/3/1827. He moved to Mississippi in 1828 to the Snowden Plantation (in Marshall County).
I can't find any connection though.
Andrew Robison Govan was the only male child of Daniel. He also had a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Govan, who married Nash ROACH.
Daniel's only sister, Rachel Govan, married William STEELE (1), and later, Bartholomew Rivers CARROLL (2)(born Waterford, Ireland).
Andrew Robison Govan had many children. Govans of Orangeburgh, SC
I have little to no knowledge about the slaves of the Govan family, or how they acquired them. What I do know is this: Andrew Govan owned the St. George Plantation, which was on the Edisto River below Orangeburg. His only son, Daniel inherited the plantation. On May 1, 1786, he received a grant for 640 acres on Beaver Creek, near the North Edisto River & 4 years later was listed in the federal census as owning 8 slaves in the northern part of Orangeburg District. (REF Orangeburgh District 1768-1868 by Culler).
Daniel Govan and his wife, Louisa Robison had two children: Andrew Robison GOVAN and Elizabeth Ann GOVAN. Andrew Robison GOVAN had nine children. Andrew served in the US Congress for So. Carolina. He moved to Marshall, Mississippi in 1828.
I have a very good friend, Bobby GoVan, who is a direct descendant to some of the Govan slaves. If you send me your email address, I will try to get the two of you hooked up, as he might have more information than I, since that is the focus of his search.
