It may be a possibility that you are looking for a Lillie Govan and not a Lizzie, might be worth checking out. I am a Govan also and my fathers mother's name was Lillie married to a William Govan who had 6 children they resided in Arkansas.

Re: Govan Family from Orangeburg SC
I am searching for a Zelma Govan (born around 1913),Julie Wright NYC 1939 (mother or in law), William Bright (born around 1909), Mrs. Emma Reid (sister or cousin) lived at 90 Morris street in Charlston SC in 1939. Most searches bring me to South Carolina near Orangeburg. My friend Marion Bright (Zelma's daughter)lost touch with all her family between 1939 and 1980. She is in her 80's and would like to find a relative.

Where in Arkansas? I'm researching as well. I'm from Arkansas. The Govans were large slave owners in Eastern Arkansas in Phillips and Lee Counties. Seemingly the Govans fathered many children with their families and their slaves.

Re: Govan Family from Orangeburg SC
Hi All. I believe you want to start at the beginning, with Andrew Robison Govan. He came from Scotland to SC, and pretty much bought up everything around there and in Arkansas from what i can tell. I am related to a different Govan branch, but this one is pretty prominent. Good luck!

Re: Govan Family from Orangeburg SC
Hello, My grandfather's middle name was Govan. Andrew Govan Dantzler, and he was originally from St. Matthews, South Carolina (near Orangeburg I believe) and moved to New York sometime after WWI. He is descended from Col. Olin M. Dantzler (a Confederate war colonel) and Caroline Glover... I have no idea how Govan came to be his middle name, although it is a middle name used in my family to this day. Ted

Andrew Robison Govan was a big figure in that area and owned most of the land there. Big family, lots of businesses. There are posts all over this board about him, so you can learn a lot. You must have descended from him!

Re: Govan Family from Orangeburg SC
I just found a Zelma Bright in 1928, 1929, and 1930 phone directories from Atlantic City, New Jersey living with her spouse Wm. L. Bright on 47 N. Delaware Ave and 726 Drexel. In one directory she is listed as Jelina (typo?). Wm is listed as a waiter then a taylor. I think these are Marion's parent's William Bright (b. 1909) and Zelma Govan Bright (b. 1913). Marion has a letter from her foster grandparent Julie Wright written @1933 mentioning being at Atlantic City. Also related to Emma Reid. Marion b.@1928 in NY or NJ has been separated from her family since 1935 and would love any responses.
