Looking for descendants of Michael MYERS (1745-1852)

Michael MYERS (I’ve also seen him listed as Orville Mike MYERS)
b. 1745 in Winchester, VA
d. August 11, 1852 at the age of 107
He is buried in Toronto Cemetery, Toronto, Jefferson Co., Ohio.
He served during the revolutionary war.

I am looking for information on himself, his ancestors, his wife, and all of his descendants, specifically his daughters. His granddaughter, Mary SHUSTER, is my direct ancestor. Her father was Michael SHUSTER. I do not know the name of Mary’s mother, but I know Michael MYERS was her grandfather. I would like to fill in the pedigree. Any information will be helpful.

I found the connection in Who’s Who on the Ohio River and Its Tributaries by Ethel Carter Leahy (Cincinnati, Ohio; E.C. Leahy Pub. Co, 1931). On page 430 the book lists Samuel Boone GOUCHER, the brother of my great-great-grandfather. It states the following:

“Mr. Goucher has an unbroken line of Ohio River tradition in his immediate family from his maternal great-grandfather, Oliver Mike Myers, who floated his produce to the southern markets in the 1700s and walked back the 2,000 miles, to his father and himself in the same occupation. As late as 1870 he flat-boated produce to New Orleans, later becoming interested in the ferry boat, running from Toronto, O., to the W. Va. Shore, which was established by his grandfather, Michael Shuster, in 1830, and which he, with other heirs, is till operating. His great-grandfather was a Government scout, and died in his 107th year; his wife died in her 95th year.”

I also found the following on page 239 of Ohio State History of the Daughters of the American Revolution (Greenfield, Ohio; Greenfield Print. & Pub. Co., c1928):

“The Michael Myers Chapter of the D. A. R. was named in honor of Michael Myers, a pioneer resident of Knox Township and an outstanding figure during the Revolutionary period. Born at Winchester, Va. In 1745, he gave great service to the government in quelling the Indians. As an Indian scout, he patrolled the banks of the Ohio from Mingo to Yellow Creek. In the Crawford Expedition, he was Captain of Scouts and performed many deeds of great bravery, often fighting a horde of Indians single-handed. His rifle, which was called ‘Limber Jennie,’ is six feet in length and is still in possession of the Myers estate. He was an unerring shot, many an Indian having lost his life as a target for that rifle.
In 1795, he located on Croxton’s Run, above Toronto, and in 1799 built a log cabin on the banks of the Ohio River. In 1800, he brought his family here on a flat boat from Pennsylvania. Later he built a stone house, the first of the kind in this locality, which was used as a hotel for forty years. He died August 11th, 1852, at the age of 107 and is buried in the Toronto Cemetery.”

Further down in that chapter the following charter members are listed as direct descendants of Michael MYERS:

My great grandmother was Anna B. Myers and I have traced her lineage back to Michael Myers from some obituary articles I found among her possessions from the Toronto paper where they lived.

According to the three obits I have for Mary E. Myers, Wm. F. Myers and Hannah Myers Ollum, I understand that Hannah was married to Michael Myers on 8/9/1846, "a grandson of Auver Mike Myers, the famous Indian scout, and to this union, three children were born, Mrs. J.S. Casey, Mrs. Jennie Stillwell, of Toronto, and W.F. Myers, deceased.

"Michael Myers died May 31, 1864..." whereupon Hannah then married Michael's brother William Myers, who died in 1876.

Don't know if this is helpful to you or not...I have a couple other connections I have made along these lines, but I have only just begun putting pieces together.

What may be of most help to you, however, is that I also have the actual paperwork from DAR for my grandmother's membership under the Michael Myers chapter as a descendent of his, endorsed by Hannah R. Casey and notarized by Edward G. Casey. It confirms your information about his birth and death dates (for Auver Michael Myers) and gives the full list of the lineage, back 5 generations from William F. Myers to Michael Myers. It says he was married to Catherine Strickler (1752-1857) of "Pigeon Creek, Penna. (6 mi. from present site of Monongahela, City)". "don't know" is written in for the married on date. I am a decendent of Michael's son George Myers.

There is also a listing of the children of the revolutionary ancestor by marriage with the last names of Shuester (Elizabeth was born to Michael Shuester in 1796), among several others.

The document also states that:
"This record was found in The History of the Upper Ohio Valley, published by, Brant & Tuller 1890, Madison, Wisconsin Vol. 2, page 159. Also pages 33-157. This man's record is also well known by the major population of Toronto, O. and he is well remembered by the older inhabitants/"

Finally, on this paper is listed on the back the ancestor's services in which there is a long paragraph about "Auver" Michael Myers, Sr. and what he did for the war (too long to type, but can scan for you if you'd like). He acted in the capacity of "Indian Scout along the Ohio River from Mingo Bottom to Yellow Creek".

Incidentally, Wm. F. Myers was in the river trade for over twenty years, then established Ohio Valley Fire Clay Co., which he then sold to American Sewer Pipe Co. Later he established (with others) Myers Clay Manufacturing Co. and later sold it to Kaul-Oberkirch Co. (from his obit).

Hope this has been of help to you. If you have any info that may benefit my search, I would love it if you shared as well (below was very helpful!).

It has been some time since the last post in this thread, but just in case:

I am the direct decendent of "Auver" Mike, son of William James Myers And Edna Myers, and Grandson of William R. Myers and Camille Goucher Myers. "Limber Jenny" and his American tall clock are still in our family.

I will be glad to provide what information I can, although our information is also incomplete. It may be some time before I can reply to emails, etc., as my time is very limited right now.

Best regards,
Michael Oliver Myers
