I am trying to find for ancestors of Jose Antonio Gotay. All I know is that him or his parents went from France to Puerto Rico in the late 1800 or early 1900. There were two brothers and one of them stood in France. I know that there are many Gotay's in Puerto Rico; however, I am searching for the French side of the family. This is my son's last name.

Angel Luis, My mother is a Gotay and she is from, Cupey Alto, Puerto Rico. From what I understand our great grandfathers were from France. They traveled to Spain, where one stayed there and the other traveled to Puerto Rico. We still have lots of Gotay family living in Cupey Alto, Puerto Rico. As a matter of fact the Gotay family owns most of the land there. Angel Luis, I have a cousin in New York named Mike Gotay and he has been searching for our ancestors also he might be able to give further information. His e-mail address is sangrigord@aol.com

If you can't find the GOTAY name in France,it could be that it is a variation of the GAUTHIER surename; pronounced GO-TEA-AY, and sometimes GO-KAY.

My name is Denise Gotay Moody and I am trying to find my ancestors on the Gotay side. My grand-father was Jerome Gotay from France and my grand-mother was Anna Carraquezel (spelling?) from Venezuela. My father didn't know much so I am trying other sources.

If you should have any information at all, please let me know. Thanks.

HI, I'M ACOSTA BY MARRIAGE BUT GOTAY BY MAIDEN.

MY MOTHER IS DINORAH GOTAY. THOUGH I WAS BORN HERE IN THE STATES, MY MOTHER AND HER FAMILY WERE BORN IN PENUELAS, PUERTO RICO.
HER FATHER WAS SIXTO GOTAY. HE PASSED AWAY ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO. I HAVE GOTAY RELATIVES IN CONNECTICUT, FLORIDAY, NEW YORK AND WE ARE IN NEW JERSEY.
MY GRANDFATHER WAS OF FRENCH DESCENT. VERY TALL PEOPLE AND STUBBORN. NOW I HAVE MET A COUPLE OF PEOPLE WITH THE LAST NAME GOTAY AS I WAS GROWING UP.
WE WERE ALWAYS SURPRISED BECAUSE THEY WERE BLACK. WHEN THEY WOULD MEET MY MOM WHO LOOKS VERY EUROPEAN THEY WOULD ASK "HOW CAN YOU BE A GOTAY AND BE WHITE".
MY MOTHER WOULD ALWAYS EMBARRASS MY SISTER AND I BY REPLYING, MY ANCESTORS OWNED YOUR ANCESTORS AS SLAVES AND THAT IS HOW THERE ARE BLACK GOTAYS TODAY. BELIEVE ME
SHE DID NOT MEAN THIS AS A RACIAL REMARK BUT AS A FACT. ANOTHER INTERESTING FACT ABOUT THE GOTAYS THAT I KNOW IS THAT MOST OF MY GRANDFATHERS BROTHERS AND SISTER WERE VERY
EDUCATED. SOME WERE DOCTORS, LAWYERS, JUDGES, SCIENTISTS. MY GRANDFATHER HAD A SISTER WHO WHEN SHE FIRST CAME TO THE STATES FROM PUERTO RICO BACK IN THE LATE 40'S OR EARLY 50'S WIDOWED
AND WAS LEFT WITH TWO SONS. SHE ASKED FOR GOVERMENT ASSISTANCE AND WAS DENIED SUPPOSEDLY BECAUSE OF HER LAST NAME. GOTAYS WERE KNOW TO BE WEALTHY. I HAVE ALWAYS TEASED MY MOTHER BY ASKING HER
WHAT HAPPENED TO US.

My grandmother is Felicita Gotay from Cupey, Puerto Rico. She is one of 16 brothers and sisters. I believe her father's name was Isador, I'm not sure. It's funny, she says the family name Gotay is from France but we have never been able to confirm that. Her father's family was from Spain.
