Greg ,

Unfortunately I do not speak the English language , I have to use some kind of program to translate. I am the grandson of Frederick Alfred Gosman , because my mother was his daughter born 01/12/1937 ( now deceased ) , as told us he died when she was about three years ago , would have been a kind of engineer or something . She also spoke, but was not sure he would have other well older children and some previous marriage . Also told that said he had fought in the First World War and probably ( not sure ) was of Jewish descent . Here in Brazil , he lived in the state of Bahia , which would have even designed a plant for generating electric power due to the technical knowledge he had. After his death , as he was not officially married to my grandmother that my mother left in the care of a known it. The name of my mother was Anna Maria Gosman , but her dad in an old photograph that had my mother still good child, wrote the name with the spelling " Hanna " and not " Hannah " as written here in Brazil . Any questions just get in touch , my facebook is Levi Glima .

Levi Gosman Lima City - Santos - São Paulo - Brazil
Google Tradutor para empresas:Google Toolkit de tradução para apps

Hello Judy

Sorry for the long delay in this reply, I havn't looked at this site for a long time.
I lost all my family history some time ago through a computer failure and also lost touch with Carol as well.
Most of my information had come from Carol, so I doubt if I can tell you any more than she has probably told you.
The Polmont Gosmans originated in Fife, so I am sure we we will be connected back there somewhere.
It is interesting to see that you have found records right back to 1650.

Robin

Hello!

I think I am a long-lost cousin!

Mollie Kingston was my dear grandmother. Leiser and Mannie were my great-grandparents. Mollie's husband was Echiel Kingstein/Kingston/Koenigstein.

I knew my Aunt Bessie somewhat. She lived near my grandmother. Bessie married future Teamster agent Isaac Litwak.

Zisi/Zissi/Sam was, when I knew him, a very cute but very old man. He had worked at Ford for many years and he was also an abstract painter.

I met Evelyn a few times. She was considerably younger than the rest. I don't remember her married name. I think she moved to Florida in her later years.

I had a brief, but very funny contact with Jack.

The other siblings I have only heard tell about.

Please email me at arihoptman@yahoo.com and maybe we can help each other fill in some gaps!

Also, I have a photograph that might be of interest to you.

Lokking forward to hearing from you.

Ari Hoptman

Do you know their names and dates?
If you wish more information on the Dainton connection, Robert and I will be happy to provide.
Ruth Clayton

Ruth & Robert:

I have a lot of detail about Jane Gosman ms Menzies, born in Oban about 1841. Husband David died in 1878. She lived in Leith Walk, Edinburgh in 1881 and must have moved to Newcastle some time after that.

As you will both know, her eldest daughter, Jane married Charles Dainton, who was dead by 1901.

I have traced this Gosman line, which includes my Gt -grandmother, back to about 1700 in Fife.

Would be pleased to exchange information with you both.

Carol

I just read your message of awhile back. My grandmother was a Gosman, Katherine "kate" Rose. She was born in NJ and was of German ancestry. Both of her parents came as children to this country. She either had a brother named Charles or an uncle, because I remember hearing talk of Uncle Charles and a picture with his name on the back. She was born Oct. 5, 1874 and died in Baltimore, MD. Aug. 1953. Does any of this connect with your Gosmans?

Re: Gosman Family Tree

Don't think the Spanish Armada stopped off in Scotland as they were being chased by the English fleet. There was a storm at the time and many Spanish ships were wrecked of the coat of Scotland and Ireland - hence the term "Black Irish" in later times, because of their black hair. Scotland was predomently non-cathloic in 1588 so the idea of stopping off for provisions would be unlikely.

The line you are looking for - Jane Gosman - are from Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. It appears they moved to the County Durham/Nothumberland after Jane was born. They do not appear in the 1881 England/Wales census, but do in the 1891 census. You need to have some one with access to the Scottish 1881 census for a look up.

David Gosman (1845 - ????)
married Jane Menzies, 1 January 1863, Edinburgh
Children:
Jane Gosman, born 1866, Edinburgh
David Philcox Gosman, born 1872, Edinburgh

Regards Robert Dainton

Gosmans in Polmont Fife

Pleased you have made contact.

I know of James Elizabeth Gosman in Polmont
in 1891 with children James, Robert William.
I can trace the Polmont branch back to Margaret
Marshall and William Gosman, who married there
on 24 June 1826.

William may have come from Fife - do you know?
The story about the Spanish Armada is well known
in the family. The surname Gosman seems to be
restricted to East Fife, where Spanish naval
vessels took on provisions after the defeat
of the Armada.

Let me have your post-1891 information and we'll
see if we can match it with my pre-1891 data.

Carol

Robin:

That's great! Your information complements mine nicely!

I'd like to send the earlier generation information to
you by email. What is your address?

The interesting question is where William Gosman, husband of Margaret Marshall,
came from - Fife?? Do you have any idea? If from Fife, he could be a brother
of one of my g/g/grandparents, John Gosman whose brother William Gosman was
b. in 1793.

Carol

L. Wilhelm Gossmann, 1838-1890

I'm working on my father-in-law's genealogy. His earliest known paternal ancestor is L. Johann Gossmann, b. 1838, Wurttemburg, Germany, d. 1890, Monticello, White County, IN. (We do not know what name the "L." stands for.) L. Johann married Friederike Wilhelmine Sophia KOCH, b. 25 July 1844 in Mecklenburg, Germany. They were married in Germany in 1863. The couple had 5 children in the following birth order: Anna F., John Joe, Wilhelm Franz Christian, Freda, and Marie Elise. The first two children were born in Germany and the last three were born in Indiana. Based on the children's birth dates and location, the family must have immigrated to the US and settled in Indiana between 1871 and 1874. The children shortened their surname to Gosman. Seeking information on the ancestry of L. Johann and his wife, hoping to learn more regarding their origins in Germany. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who might have information on this family or who might recommend an approach to researching the lines in Germany. Thanks!
