I'm working on my father-in-law's genealogy. His earliest known paternal ancestor is L. Johann Gossmann, b. 1838, Wurttemburg, Germany, d. 1890, Monticello, White County, IN. (We do not know what name the "L." stands for.) L. Johann married Friederike Wilhelmine Sophia KOCH, b. 25 July 1844 in Mecklenburg, Germany. They were married in Germany in 1863. The couple had 5 children in the following birth order: Anna F., John Joe, Wilhelm Franz Christian, Freda, and Marie Elise. The first two children were born in Germany and the last three were born in Indiana. Based on the children's birth dates and location, the family must have immigrated to the US and settled in Indiana between 1871 and 1874. The children shortened their surname to Gosman. Seeking information on the ancestry of L. Johann and his wife, hoping to learn more regarding their origins in Germany. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who might have information on this family or who might recommend an approach to researching the lines in Germany. Thanks!
