Hi,
I just created a new thread and noticed this thread. You mentioned Eaton, my Great Grand parent's, John and Katherine Goral are recorded in the 1900 Census in Eaton, Wisconsin. They also eventually had 11 children. I wonder if John Had brothers or was a nephew to this family line given the common city. Please respond to jeannelanning thread, "Goral liniage were in Illinois and or Wisconsin" in the Goral Board. jeanne.lanning@yahoo.com

Seeking further family tree branches in U.S. and back to Prussia. My Goral family History is stuck at John and Katherine Goral whose parents were (noted in 1900 census, Eaton, Wisconsin) all born in what today is Poland/Germany when it was Prussia. I am a Great Granddaughter of John and Katherine Goral; John born 1874, Illinois and Katherine Born 1877, Wisconsin, maiden name unknown. They had 11 children over a span of 22 years, the first born in 1897 and youngest, my Grandfather, born in 1919, all in Wisconsin. All, including my Father Richard J. Goral (11Feb 1946 - 26Nov 2004), are passed away, most before I was born, to my knowldge. Except for my Father and Grandfather, I never knew they existed till a couple years ago. With all those relations I am hoping someone can help me in connecting the family tree overseas. Maybe even if John Goral was another Goral's cousin or nephew, I'd love to see the whole picture and the family immagration story. jeanne.lanning@yahoo.com

Re: Any Information on the last name Goral

I am a Granddaughter of the late Richard P. Goral. He was born prior to 1920 in Wisconsin and was the youngest of 11 brothers and sisters. In a U. S. census his father, born 1874 in Illinois, reports all of his and his spouces parents were born in Poland/Germany on each of the four persons.

In researching the proper origin, I learned that several Goral's had also migrated to Brazil. So, what you say about German Goral's in Brazil makes sence.

To put it in a nutshell, modern Poland and part of Germany occupy what was Prussia. There were 5 provences, one included Berlin and Frankfurt. Eastern Prussia spoke Russian and in the west they spoke German. Prussia no longer exists.

Prussia was at the heart of World War II. Hitler began the war by attempting to take a large chunk of the German speaking Prussion lands to be under German rule. Prussian allies defended Prussia, WWII snowballed and escalated from there.

I hope this helps. As to the Brazil/Germany question, this is only what I can recall from my own family research. As to this line of my family research I'd be interested in learning who the migrating parens were of John Goral Born 1874 in Illinois and of his wife Katherine(sp) Goral Born in 1877 posibly October in Wisconsin. They had 11 children who's birth's occure over a span of 22 years, from the first in 1897 to the youngest born in 1919, all in Wisconsin. Any further information is hoped for. jeanne.lanning@yahoo.com
i am trying to find out about my lineage also. I can only play on the computer when Kayla (my wife) is out. But if, you're my uncle Ron from Eaton, I would like to sit and chat about anything that Grandpa Goral has ever told you. Dad does not like to talk, as well as Grandma, or even Uncle Rick. I hope you're doing well, and come to Eaton to visit. Also If there are any more Goral's that would like to chat, Iwould like any info about our family. goral17@charter.net

My grandmother's name was supposedly "Frances" Goral and she married my grandfather (Kowalski) when both lived in Zamosc/Zalosc? on the SE border of Poland near the Ukraine. She died in 1933 in Winnipeg so I know almost nothing except that her mother died young too and her father remarried and she had a brother from each marriage I think. Still trying to find Canada records of burial. I also heard about the Goral mountains but they are in Zakopane. Hope it helps! Good luck.

I think I have found that Maciez Goral (born 1850) must have changed his name to Martin when he immigrated to the USA. I can find him in the census records from Eaton, WI from 1900 married to Augusta (born 1848) where they had 7 kids: John (1874), Anton (1876), Walter (1881), Stanley (1883), Theodore (1884), Ignatius (1887), and Joseph (1889).

Ignatius (Nick) Goral born Feb. 1, 1887 in Eaton, Brown, Wisconsin and died Sept. 17th, 1964. He was my great grandfather. Therefore, Martin (or Maciez) would be my great, great grandfather.

Ignatius married Hedwig, also called Hattie, Tarkowski (1890-1979) in 1907 in Eaton, WI. They had 14 children Emma (1908-1998), Andrew (1909-1981), Edward (1911-2004), Nicholas (b 1913), Raphael (1914-1992), Magdelene (1916-1984), Regina (1918-2007), Esther (b 1919), Bernard (b 1921), Leonard (1923-2005), Lorriane (1925- ), Joan (1927-1976), Ignatius (1930-1992), Lillian (1931-1994).

Leonard Goral was my grandfather. He married Beatrice DeKeyser (1929-) in 1950 in Green Bay, WI. They moved to the Milwaukee area and had 7 children: Craig (1951-), Keith (1952-1970), Linda (1953-), Patricia (1954-), Deborah (1956-), Blaine (1960-), and Pamela (1964-).

Patricia, who is my mother, married Mark Landowski and had 3 kids: (Christopher, Brian, and Nicholas). We live in the suburbs of Milwaukee.

I have heard that my grandfather (Leonard Goral) had relatives out in Michigan and had went there on occasion to visit them. They must be related to Ignitius' brother John. So likely chickenlegs and I are related somehow.

Chris

I too am looking for Goral family members in Poland. Wincenty Goral (Goralow?) married Jozef Bartosiak in late 1800s, probably in Trojanowo area. Do you have any further information on the Gorals that might be of help with my research?

Dear Philippe,
It has been some time. Goralczyk also means "son of Goralczyk". I have been corresponding with a gentleman from Germany who's family on his mother's side is Goralczyk, but so far the oldest record in his family is a Goral and he was born in Bulowice near Bielsko-Biala. The family immigrated to Germany some time ago. My family comes from Okrajnik/Lekawica about 16 km from Bulowice. Wayne Covell is also researching Bulski/Goralczyk family in Chruszbrod which is close to Wysoka. Perhaps they are the same family. Please send me a private e-mail podhale2003@yahoo.com and I will forward the message on to him.
Kind regards,
Barbara Goralczyk

I am assisting my cousin in searching his GORAL connection in Wisconsin. So far, he has placed a Walter GORAL, born about 1881. Walter married Nettie Wypiszynski. The union bore 10 children. I can place them in Eaton, Brown Co, Wisconsin in the 1920 Census Records. Does anyone have a connection to this family? Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

email direct to kbux1209@aol.com

Re: Goral surname

Hey Cousin!

First of all, congratulations on the birth of your new son! Welcome to the family, Lilia and Chance!

For your information, and for anyone else who reads this (I'm assuming this will be posted on this search board), I'll tell you what I found out from a man who specializes in researching Polish surnames: First of all, in case someone out there doesn't know, "wicz" basically means "son of".

Now it gets interesting! In Poland, there is a mountain range called the Goral mountains. The people who live there are known, collectively, as The Goral (or Gorale, I'd have to check). Anyway, they are a fairly distinct ethnic group, with their own dialect, customs, forms of dress, etc.

Essentially, when used in a name, "Goral(e)" translates to "Mountain Man" (or, to be"politically correct", I suppose, "mountain person"). Therefore, Goralewicz literally means, "Son of the Mountain Man". So, there you have it! We are decended from Polish mountain people (not, necessarily, Polish Hillbillys!). :-)

For anyone researching their Polish Roots, I recommend subscribing (it's free!) to "Gen Dobry!" (Polish for "good morning".) This publication is know as " the e-zine of Polish Roots", and is "chock full" of all sorts of reference information in every issue. Its editor/publisher is the man I referred to above, William F. Fred Hoffman. It can be found on line at:

Now, Steve, contact me, okay? and tell Alex and the rest of the family I said "Hi!" - or, as I guess you Texans might say, "Howdy!" :-)

I have some information on our Goral Family in Wisconsin and Michigan. What I have is sketchy, but maybe a name or location will ring a bell. A Stanislaus and Marianna Goral had a son named Maciez (or Matthew) Goral (I don't know anything about brothers or sisters). Maciez Goral was born about 1850 near Warsaw, Poland as the family story is told. Maciez married Konstacia Sieraeka (I've seen a lot of various spellings for her name) and they immigrated to America about 1871 and headed directly to the Chicago area. We are thinking they had relatives there. Maciez and Marianna had seven children: John, Antonia, Walter, Stanley, Theordore, Ignatius (Nick) and Joe. They moved to Eaton (better known as Poland), Brown Co., Wisconsin about 1879 to farm. The 1880 census also has a niece living with them: Rosie Sieracha. It seems to me I remember a story about Maciez's parents died when he was young and he was raised by relatives in Germany. Maybe this is the brother you are looking for? I will have to ask about this again. Maciez's son John would be my gg-grandfather - all of John's children moved to Michigan in the Cheboygan area and Detroit area. Hope this helps. Laura

Hello Krissy,
you're right, the Goral surname has really its origin in Polish language. It means mountains people (maybe Highlander in Eng.). Proper polish is Góral (there's a dash up on the o letter-dont knowing how different language version does this sign treat). Gorals, as a group of people live in Poland in Tatra mountains and also Podhale region. Other group of Gorals lived (and live) in the Czech republic, in Beskydy mountains. While formerly Gorals were rather poor mountain people mostly engaged in farmering and shepherding, now Goral is used only for indicating citizens from above-mentioned regions. Some people are proud of beeing gorals, some aren't.
There are many people with the surname Goral in Poland, very few in the Czech republic. I know from my grandfather that his ancestors maybe came from Holland (17-18 cent.).

Hello Heaven,
I'am sorry that at this time i have not find any relatives in states, because most of american goral are the third generation which is living in the states, and have no information about their relative who came from Poland (date and town of birth). So the goral's family in the states are very atomised.
Yet, I still hope to find something.
