Hello,
I am doing research and planning to write a small book on my family and the origin of our last name which is, Goral. I know that it is a Polish last name. I also know little bits and pieces as far as there are people in Poland (mountain people- is what the name Goral means), there is also supposedly a mountain range or peak, etc. I do not know any specifics or where i may find the most information. My grandparents would have been great resources, but unfortunatly they are no longer living...if anybody has any information on the last name, part of Poland, etc. please let me know.

Thank you,

Krissy

Hello Krissy,
you're right, the Goral surname has really its origin in Polish language. It means mountains people (maybe Highlander in Eng.). Proper polish is Góral (there's a dash up on the o letter-dont knowing how different language version does this sign treat). Gorals, as a group of people live in Poland in Tatra mountains and also Podhale region. Other group of Gorals lived (and live) in the Czech republic, in Beskydy mountains. While formerly Gorals were rather poor mountain people mostly engaged in farmering and shepherding, now Goral is used only for indicating citizens from above-mentioned regions. Some people are proud of beeing gorals, some aren't.
There are many people with the surname Goral in Poland, very few in the Czech republic. I know from my grandfather that his ancestors maybe came from Holland (17-18 cent.).

Surnames: Goral - Bartosiak
I too am looking for Goral family members in Poland. Wincenty Goral (Goralow?) married Jozef Bartosiak in late 1800s, probably in Trojanowo area. Do you have any further information on the Gorals that might be of help with my research?

My grandmother's name was supposedly "Frances" Goral and she married my grandfather (Kowalski) when both lived in Zamosc/Zalosc? on the SE border of Poland near the Ukraine. She died in 1933 in Winnipeg so I know almost nothing except that her mother died young too and her father remarried and she had a brother from each marriage I think. Still trying to find Canada records of burial. I also heard about the Goral mountains but they are in Zakopane. Hope it helps! Good luck.

I am a Granddaughter of the late Richard P. Goral. He was born prior to 1920 in Wisconsin and was the youngest of 11 brothers and sisters. In a U. S. census his father, born 1874 in Illinois, reports all of his and his spouces parents were born in Poland/Germany on each of the four persons.

In researching the proper origin, I learned that several Goral's had also migrated to Brazil. So, what you say about German Goral's in Brazil makes sence.

To put it in a nutshell, modern Poland and part of Germany occupy what was Prussia. There were 5 provences, one included Berlin and Frankfurt. Eastern Prussia spoke Russian and in the west they spoke German. Prussia no longer exists.

Prussia was at the heart of World War II. Hitler began the war by attempting to take a large chunk of the German speaking Prussion lands to be under German rule. Prussian allies defended Prussia, WWII snowballed and escalated from there.

I hope this helps. As to the Brazil/Germany question, this is only what I can recall from my own family research. As to this line of my family research I'd be interested in learning who the migrating parens were of John Goral Born 1874 in Illinois and of his wife Katherine(sp) Goral Born in 1877 posibly October in Wisconsin. They had 11 children who's birth's occure over a span of 22 years, from the first in 1897 to the youngest born in 1919, all in Wisconsin. Any further information is hoped for. jeanne.lanning@yahoo.com
